Fires along the Highways,,,,

 According to the newspaper,,,southern NM is facing yet another dry summer with strong winds,,,,That right there makes me start worring bout them DANG "mysterious fires" along the highways. Every year there is lots of property losses due to these fires along highways. Our place is just east of a major N/S highway,,,and the prevailing winds are from the SW,,,,!!! 2 Years ago,,we had a very close call but was fortunate in that I was outside  in garage and I smelled something burning and fire dept was able to get it out before it got going real good. The fire got to within 20 feet of our Son's house next door,,,,,
 I been thinkin bout makin a "ripper" sort of drag, using railroad spikes to pull behind the D14. The D14 doesn't have a PTO or lift arms and am wonderin whether that would even work out,,?? I also tried to use the bucket in reverse but with my bad back,,,that didn't work worth a chit,,,,,,
  Gosh dang,,if I could just talk ole Shameless into deliverin the Chevy Allis down here,,I could get her runnin in a heart beat and have something to pull this drag,,I'm thinkin on,,,,,
 I'd like to see some pics of what others have made for something like this,,,,

I am a wildland firefighter in MN and was thinking maybe it would be a good idea to do a prescribed burn around the home place. But even more fun might be using a tandem disc to build a fire break around the place. Good luck in your dry season.

And they would burn like crazy unless they is drug down or disc.ed in.
I don.t feel sfe with a perscribed burn cause i aint got enough water hoses for control. Iwas thinkin on a "ripper drag" to rip up the top 2-3 inches....?
Maybe a disc like ole says is what i need as thoe don.t require PTO or lift arms...????

Joe if you get a disc I would try or 8 feet 10 max that tractor isn't going to like anything too wide. What happens once you open the ground up will you end up living in the middle of a dust storm as the wind blows across the open ground? I am just thinking out loud I know I have to keep my ground covered all the time because the river floods it and my fields will wash away if I break then open at the wrong time don't know what the risks are where you are.
But on second thought the right idea is to buy another tractor for the job. You always need a backup tractor anyway...

I always though a Serviss IH terrace plow would work great fighting fires, because it throws the dirt 30' and would smother a fire.

when I worked at the horse ranch, they made a steel triangle harrow with 7 inch steel rods welded about 8 inches apart. used it to harrow up the arenas with it. pulled it with a garden tractor, was about 3 ft wide and pulled at one of the points.

   Hey,,,maybe thas a better idea on a triangle built one,,,I was thinkin on two pieces of 4" pipe spaced bout 4' apart ,,, with the RR spikes welded where the back set would catch what the front spikes missed,,,???
  When I first started thinkin on this I built a jury rigged drag from an old 10' chain link gate and wired two RR ties on it and kept addin weight on it but it never did much to diggin up any weeds just kinda drug over the weeds,,,,,

X2 on the prescribed burn. And any fire break helps out even if it doesn't completely stop the fire. Georgia Forestry will come out and advise and help on a prescribed burn. If you are friends with the local volunteer fire department they might come out and do a burn as part of their training.

LOL yer starting to become a city bot! when I look at your place, it looks like about all sand (super mini rocks) and if you don't let anything grow in that, then it won't burn! if something is already there now, kill it, let it dry and throw a cigar or a cig that I ain't smoking out there and let it go as much as it can before the fire dept puts it out! or have them come burn it for practice! now...if'n you just are using this as an excuse to buy another AC tractor...then carry on and let it grow and disreguard most of this last post! LOL

you could pour a concrete fence between you and the road!
