The field poles in the generator need to be magnetized with the right polarity to match the battery. Called flashing, accomplished by use a wire jumper from the battery terminal on the voltage regulator (or cutout) to the armature terminal. Needs to be done every time the generator has sat a long time and the battery polarity is changed. While a positive ground alternator is a possibility there are very few in the world, SAE standards require negative ground in car, trucks, and ag equipment since about 1965 and require 12 volts. 6 and 24 volts not allowed since then.

There are no magnets in a generator than need magnetized. If the generator will motor by jumping it with 6 volts, it might be OK to use as is. That being said, the 6 volt system isn't as maintenance free as an alternator .

Hmmm, did not know that. Shows extent of my knowledge. Can’t motor it up as is. PO messed it up by breaking the wires to the brushes. Got to repair that first. Haven’t been able to figure out how the wires attach to the posts. Looks like the inner ends of the posts are split and the wires are wedged in? Thanks

Few questions on a G
1. Will a small one wire alternator fit on a G without modification to sheet metal?
2. Main jet: does an oring go in the groove? Have three of these tractors and all three have carb issues
3. If I stick with generator, magnets will need magnetized. Probably something I can’t do. Your thoughts? If I have to take to shop, might as well convert to alternator is my thought
4. If I convert, will the 6V starter be okay with 12v battery? Do it with my cubs, but figgered I better ask
