Have any of you let your dogs snack on chicken bones ?? I've been told by my spouse/mother/sister/VET that chicken bones are a NO-NO for dogs

Well known fact, don't feed your dog chicken bones. They break into shards, stick in their throat and cause a dog to choke to death. Not advisable.

It’s my understanding that chicken bones may splinter when chewed, the supposed exception is the neck bones, those crumble when chewed. We don’t have first hand knowledge, we have never fed our dog, and cat chicken bones.

I tried to follow the science, but it was not there. I then followed the money, and that’s where I found the science.

Well you can do the experiment by feeding chicken bones to your dog. But if you are wrong and all the women in your life are mad at you. I sure would not want to be you.
This is none computer information, but observation. Never heard of wolfs, coyotes, or foxes being found in trouble after raiding a chicken coop. But the better the dog, the more loved, the higher the probability one of the the sharp ends when you break a round poultry bone will make a whole in the gut of your dog. So is it worth it? If you need to feed your best friend from your plate and your having poultry, feed it the cartilage off the end of leg bones or the meat. As best I can remember 60 years ago most country dogs where the garbage disposal so they would of got all kinds of bones. If the dog was lucky it would get a handful of dry dog food. But in the New World of if we can save just one, you are a dirty monster to take a chance on feeding anything that could hurt the worthless mutt.

I guess the thought is that cooked bones are no longer soft like a raw bone. They become brittle and will splinter. Poultry, pork and rib bones.
That may explain the wild dog idea. My uncle always feed his dog chicken bones and never did the dog any harm and he was a guy that knew everything! I never wanted to chance it as I have always had too much time and money in my dogs.

Grew up in 50s & 60s and our farm dogs got what was left on the table for years. All kinds of bones and what ever they could drag up from the timber. Sissy city dogs may be a different situation. Growing up I don't remember buying any dog food ever. Edited by Larry Miller - 13 Feb 2022 at 9:09am |

I understand the sharp bone thing. It makes sense. That said,as a kid our dogs got what came off the table so I'm sure they ate cooked chicken bones. Mom dressed young birds every summer and we ate a lot of chicken. No known problems. For 42yrs of married life,my wife has chose NOT to feed our dogs chicken bones of any kind.

I usually have Tuesday lunch with some guys and one that grew up in England and has recently become a proud citizen of our USA. He always takes home to his dogs all the scraps and boy do the guys love wings. No dead dogs yet!

yup my old farm dog ate everything. She got all types of scraps. Was amazing at the bones she could grind up. There wasn’t a varmint on the farm when she was around. When I cut hay she would follow between the right rear tire of haybine and uncut hay and catch mice. Was so close the only way I knew she was there was when she got something cuz she would take it over out of the way and lay down for the feast. She was part husky, shepherd and lab mix lol

Let me Google it. The dogs tend to fly up into trees at night and don't want to come back down.
