Who out there knows where to get the correct color scheme steering wheel for a D-21, the orriginal has cracked and seperated around the hub.  The wheel has creme colored spokes/center,  and a black wheel with creme accents in the grip depressions.  All of the aftermarket ones I see online, are all solid color but claim to be correct??   My D-17 has the same color scheme, and I will need one for it, when I do a restoration on it also.

Thanks in advance.

Anthony

It started out as all cream colored, just worn down to the black. Same on the D17.

Burt is correct.  The cream colour wears off with use.  It should be all cream to start with.  Many vendors here have them available.

I bought a new one but I did not like the finish so I sanded off the coating and made me up some base coat about what I thought the cream should be and then put several coats of clear over it. I really like the "slick" finish and I would recomend this method to really make a nice looking steering wheel.JP

Thanks guys,

I could have sworn that was factory, I will look again at the spokes where they meet the wheel.  Dad drove the thing off the rail car when new, I will have to see if he remembers that far back.

Sure makes it easier to get a new one.

Thanks again,

We tried to get a white steering wheel for our 17 but could only find the white ones with splines and our 57 D17 basicaly has the 45 steering wheel with a pin. Are all D21's the same in that way.

That is because only the later ones came with white steering wheels, about 1961 and when they changed the paint scheme they also changed the mountings to splined with a nut. I am sure you realize that the shape of the wheel is entirely differant too.  If you want a white wheel there are two ways to get there, paint on one that fits or a repro splined hub wheel and an afternoon spent with a mill and lathe.

Butch,no I didn't know they were different shapes, but we were going to get the short shaft that is held in the column that has splines. I just think the white wheel adds a little more class to the tractor.

There is one more steering wheel. The black bar grill D-10/12/14/17's had a black steering wheel with the diamond or Power steering logo in the center and mounted on a splined steering shaft. In 1961 those steering wheels became cream. I've always been able to find enough grey steering wheels from Gleaner E's to repaint and use on my D series restorations. The early D-14/17's with the orange diamond grill had the WD-45 style steering wheel with the pin.
Nothing is impossible if it is properly financed

Ditto Calvin.  One of our parts E's (w/ cab) had a near perfect original steering wheel that I used on my D12 III.  The steering gearbox bearings came in handy as well.
