Is the back end of a diesel engine from a F2 combine the same as the back end of a 262 gas or diesel?  For use in a D17

Im guessing you are pertaining to the 433I used in the later F2's, and not the 301 like the early F2's used.  Im not certain on this, i would have to measure the one in our F2, but i think it would be bigger than a 262, but maybe you could find an adaptor plate of some sort.  Non the less it would be one heck of a tractor, lots of power and great fuel economy, but it may have to be turned down so the rear end holds together.

Which motor do you have? An F2 had either the 6cyl 301cid natural asperated, or the 4cyl 200cid with turbo. A 301 will bolt up to a D19 with little modification (19 used the same 262). I would say the 200cid engine would also, being that id is a 4cyl version of the 301.

I don't have a motor, yet. I have been searching Craigslist in the central states. Several candidates.
I have a new overhauled 6-354 Perkins on the shelf. My lathe looks to be about an inch too small to hook the flywheels together to use that. Maybe I should hire that done.

The 6 cyl 301 or the 433I would be the same on the flywheel end. The back plate from combine will bolt to D17 bell housing, side frame bolts line up and three of the 1/2" bolts line up, the 1/2" bolt behind starter is off a little so you have to drill hole in back plate for it. You need a 301 tractor flywheel and clutch, same spines in clucth disc. Some grinding in bell housing for pressure plate to clear not much and for starter to fit. With 4cyl frt end and sheet medal would all fit. if you use diesel tractor.  Sam T-Ga.

Don, yes the 200cid or 433I is the same back to #4 cyl. as the 6 cyl 301. The trust main is on #4 between  #3 and #4 rod in both engines. Same rods, pistons, and sleeves in both engines. Sam T-Ga.

I brought home an engine. 301. The first measurements look like it will work. 3 1/2 inches longer than the 262. I can handle that. Now, if the clutch, flywheel, starter drive work as good, I am on the way. A fellow said "tractor flywheel" - was that D19 or 190 or are they the same?  The combine flywheel from 262 and 301 seem to be the same.

If your putting it in a D19 you will need a set of 190 frame rails the D19s arent wide enough. Im gona guess and say that a 17 wont be wide enough either.

Narrow the front timing cover plate instead of wider side rails, then your radiator shell still fits.

Here is a very nice D-17 with a 301 engine in Quebec. Custom hoods and side rails. Beautiful workmanship!!

WOW! A picture worth a thousand words. That is great. That is good to see that plate will bolt to the tractor housing. Now it is just a matter of the depth to the clutch release bearing and the spline into the clutch plate. I don't recognize that starter but that should be possible.  I want a hydraulic pump on the front of the crankshaft so siderails aren't a concern.

That is a reduction drive starter. This engine has very high compression and runs aviation gas. I don't remember the flywheel/clutch combo. The adaptor plate is custom. The final drives have also be set back for pulling and lowering the tractor. The owner/builder sometimes posts on here (m.forest) I've always thought that a 433T would be nice in a D-17. I wonder why A-C didn't use the 433T in the 170/175 tractors.
The last 715C backhoes switched from a 236 Perkins to a 433T.

The reduction drive starter was used on the late 8010 tractors, if you want to buy one from AGCO.

I have this unit running. It seems to run fine. I don't see anything bad going on. I have a question. The oil pan dipstick says " full   running". Does that mean to check the oil with the engine running. I had a D8 13A that was that way. But that engine was 30 years older than this one. Would the manufacturer have you climb up on a running combine to check the oil?

My 301's dipstick has 2 sides, one side that gives the levels while running, the other says the levels stopped.  Flip over your dipstick and see if it has the stopped levels.  If the engine was from a combine, I would think it would have both.

That is an awesome upgrade. If you didn't know a D17 wasn't supposed to have that engine in it, you'd never know it was custom.

That is a nice job, isn't it? I wish mine had a couple gallons of orange paint on it. With that quality of application.
Now, I can get the tractor out of the back corner and work on getting that 3 point adapter under it.  Last winter I didn't get any shop time between moving snow and no power and managing 30% wet corn.

Next question, how was the tractor tachometer driven on the 301 diesel?

Drove the unit outside on it's own power. We didn't notice anything bad.
I extended the frame 20 inches for the longer engine and a hydraulic pump on the front of the engine.
If an extended hood is good on a Peterbilt, it should  be OK on an Allis Chalmers?
