Then couldn't part it out? Bought a WD 3-4 months ago with the idea of parting it out. I have been looking at it for 2 months and just can't bring myself to parting it out now. Anyone else have this problem?

I have 3 or 4 that would probably qualify as parts tractors, but they all run and could be decent tractors with a little rubbin'. I haven't had the heart to take one apart yet.

Most definitely...have the same problem with a 43' B out back. Bought it to use for parts and now it is heading for the light pulling classes. Instead of making money, it's costing me big! That's ok, at least it's gonna keep running instead of rusting into a heap!

Yep, got a 51 WD out in the shed that needs an engine. After getting it home I realized the draw bar hole is still round, the hand clutch and brake pedals still fit good without wobble.

My first WD 'NF' with a stuck engine was free. I towed it home 10 miles at 5 mph because the front end was so sloppy I thought it would flip over going any faster.
The battery box and dash panel was full of yellow jackets I found out after the first big pothole. It was a long ride.
Fixed it up on the cheap and used it for 4 years and sold it for $1200.
It was worn but a very usable and dependable old tractor.
Never let me down a single time.
That is what got me started on AC tractors

my WC was parts till it started !
my second 45 was good till I had to recover some investment and part it out, the previous owner should not have put so much in such a pitted frame. |

Bought a sorry D12 with a stuck engine and mostly complete. Got the engine freed up and it ran real good. However, some of the tin and tires were not good, and the hitch was gone....so I purchased a "parts" D12 anf with some of its parts and tires/hitch from a parts CA got it together. Ran out real nice, so cleaned it up and painted it. Now, it looks and runs out great. Then....I decided the "parts" D12 could be salvaged. It is now running good and I have used it this spring plowing with a 2X14 SC plow. I had to scavange parts from the CA (and others), fabbed up a lot of other items to replace the parts robbed for the other D12. Need fenders for it; tho I think I can make use of some D14 fenders to get it together.
Bottom line, I could have purchased a real decent restored D12 (and a ???) for what I have into the 2 I have.

but anyone can buy a decent tractor
for what I have in any of mine, I could have have bought a nice pretty one, but that would be as much fun as falling off a log. If you're tying to sell me a pretty one not needing anything, you better sharpen your pencil. Edited by bigfish_Oh - 18 Apr 2010 at 8:52pm |

Parts tractors were the only ones I could still sneak by my wife. I'm not sure what I'll try now that she has caught on that "parts tractor" means it will be needing parts in the future. |

Sometimes the next parts tractor is all you need to resurect the other one, maybe an engine, trans or something. Just don't know where some of these projects are headed till later.

My '45 WC was bought as a parts tractor at a farm sale but after getting it home and finding out it ran, it was put back to work on the place. that was about 6 years ago and it's still in one piece and working. (Could use brakes, though!!)

The guy I worked for when I was in high school had a johndeere 55 combine that sat in the weed row forever. Well the neighbor offered him $500 for it for a parts machine . Two weeks later it was their main combine. I would guess that was a cheap harvest. |

We have that problem once in a while but then we realize that the only way we can fit them in the barns is if they are on the shelves lol

All of our tractors were "parts" tractors when we bought them.
Of course, we have an obscene amount of time and money in them, but they have done an obscene amount of work for us as well.

There isn't much a WC can't do.
WD's just do it better. |

Yep, a number of times. I know it makes more business sense to drop 'em, but I just can't do it everytime. That's why I love a thrown rod, or something major. No decisions to make, just start wrenching.
My D15 II was a very early purchase for the company. I towed the carcass on the trailer, but had more parts in the back of my suburban than on the trailer.
Use it daily now.
