 Topic: Engine oil leakage

I have a D17, with a small amount of oil leaking from ,what appears to be the rear main seal. The amount appears to be 1/2 qt for every 15 to 20 hrs of operation. My question is, can anyone recommend an additive that can minimize the leak? Once again, thanks for your help.

Its either the rear main, or the transmission input shaft. Both require removal of the engine to fix. Don't know if any additive can fix a leak that bad. AaronSEIA

Like Aaron said it could be the trans seal. That's what it was on my D 15. HTH

If the engine oil ievel is going down and the hydraulic sump isn't, the rear seal OR the pan gasket is the problem. Straight 30 or 40wt oil is better than 10W-30 for leaks. Rear seal replacement is pretty involved. Pan gasket not as much, but still some work when it has power steering and a wide front axle.

An additive might work for a very short time, but ultimately you are going to have to take the engine out. Over 60 years, seals can wear and leak. Nothing in a bottle can fix that!

I don't have the equipment or knowledge to replace the rear seal. So, I'll budget that for next year. I got the tractor last year and around May I changed the oil to 10w-30. It was a month or 2 later that a small drop appeared. So the advice of using a 30wt or 40 at oil may buy me time. Really gentlemen I am envious of your knowledge and mechanical skill. Thank you all for your help.
