I think I've seen posts at some point in time on engine oil issues, but here goes again. Done spring planting and its going to rain tomorrow so maybe a good time to do oil and filter changes. My Agco dealer is about 8 miles farther than local JD dealer and closes 1/2 hour sooner. Was running late and needed oil for my Allis 210 and 220 and my JD 4240. Wasn't going to make it to Agco dealer on time so I bought at JD dealer- Plus 50 II 15W-40 engine oil. Anyone have any thoughts or advice on using it in my Allis'. Also, any thoughts on oil change intervals. I generally do in spring after planting (takes me to after harvest), then do it again before freeze up and then run until after planting. Regarding hyd/transmission oil, the JD parts guy said that hydraulic oil differences between the different manufacturers is more critical. What modern hydraulic/transmission oil is recommended for Allis 426 and 301 engines? Any thoughts anyone?

The 15/40 oil seems to be what most diesel engine mfg use now. A good brand name oil sold in dealers is probably packed by major oil company. Like wally world selling Shell Rotella, but i would not buy Wally world oil itself.
As far as trans-hyd, should be a listing of what specs the oil meets somewhere on lable, or listing on site if it meets JD and AC specs.
Use of a hour meeter to record time intervals is a good idea, as well as oil sampeling if you are dealing with large amounts of oil per change.

Many Hydraulic- transmission oils meet multiple specs. That is real common these days. I would not think the JD dealer would make a statement like that. I would be willing to bet the oil Jd sells for the 4240 also meets the AC 821 spec.

Your local Cat dealer will have oil samples for around 15 bucks, very usefull information from a oil sample.

JD Plus 50 15w40 was one of the best dino diesel oils out there last time I saw an analysis on Bob Is the Oil Guy website. Very strong additive package. I'm not sure if they changed the formulation from the CI-4+ that was the latest I knew of. I would be fine running that oil for the usual OCI (100-150 hours).

Ive been using Mobile Delvac 1300 in my 7050 and 7060, and changing every 300 hours or so. I use Orchelns brand of hydraulic oil for the transmission and hydraulics, but have used JD hytran in my 7050 in a pinch. The JD hydraulic oil seems thinner than others.

I believe JD makes 2 different weights of hytran. One is the standard weight, and the other is a low viscosity version. Last time I saw it in the dealership at home it was pretty clearly labeled. I believe the low viscosity stuff had a lighter purple label compared to the standard hygard. Either way, that stuff's $$$...

I would probably be using the Universal Tractor Fluid straight from Wal Mart or the local Farm Store--- normally the better prices here.
