I tested both the gen on the d17 last night and one off of my A2 and both are good. Both motored and both slowed down when I grounded out the F lug. So now that limits it to the voltage regulator and/or wiring. I may end up replacing all the wires anyway as they are not real great, but how do I test the regulator, and also if bad where can I get a new negative ground regulator (Tony/SteveNJ do you carry these)?. It has four lugs (three off one side and one off the other)

Sandknob, be kinda careful and remove the screws that hold the cover on the regulator and looky in. See if contacts are Stuck/welded together. Sometimes if lucky, you can file dirtypoints clean again and they will work. Be careful on all the adjustments in therebecause if you tweek something, it has a drastic change in what kind of out put the generator will charge.
You say the battery was in neg ground, right? If that is the case, take the regulator off and see if it has any stampings on the bottom of the unit stating if its neg or pos grounded.
Glad to hear of your progress so far. Keep it up and you will have it working again. Its nice when things work like they should, specially when you get done doing the work yourself.
Oh, if you pull the light switch on while the tractor is off, does the amp gauge show discharge or charge? If it shows charge, then somebody tossed the battery in backwards. - At least usually when the decision is made to change from pos ground to negative ground the coil wires get switched, and the wiring on amp gauge does too.- But have seen where a fellow marked + - on the tractor by the gauge to show which way the needle ws suppose to go to show charge.

Since we know the generator is OK, check the wires. You've ruled out the generator, now test the wires or replace them if they are questionable. Be sure the connections are clean and tight. I don't know of an actual test for a regulator. If you rule out the Generator and wires, the only thing left is the regulator. You might pull the cover off the regulator and see if the points over the large diameter wire are stuck together. You can try cleaning the points on the regulator. I find a "Roloc" disc on a die grinder does a superior job compared to a file. If you take anything apart, you will need an accurate volt meter to set the charging voltage when you're done.

If you have a generator the battery should be positive ground, not negative. Bob

I know the original was postive ground, but you can switch them to negative ground with the correct parts. I was just wondering who carried the correct voltage regulator for negative ground and the vr's are different.

I have all kinds of VR's in stock. Shoot me the number off the Gennie so I know what the rated output is and I can match up a VR to the system...
