I drove past a Ford 350 SD dually today that 1 single "wide" assed tire (on each side) to fill the fender well area, is this the future of dually's ?

@FREEDGUY; Now that you mention it, I'm surprised that it has taken this long. Super singles have been used on tractor trailers for years.

Super Singles have entered the Heavy Truck market but not many are opting for them.  Cannot Limp In on a Super Single without destroying the tire as opposed to losing One dual and just slowing down to save the other.

Super Singles are fine on Dry Roads, Long Distance and medium level payloads, are even good for and used as Drop Axle support tires for weight dispersal.  There are few chains for these where the ones out there are heavier than a Duals set and harder to muscle on(is a Requirement in NW states when chain laws are on in winter), are NOT cheaper than a set of duals nor longer lived.  Some are installing on a lower friction basis trying for fuel economy, good luck with that, and most with them find them as cumbersome as racing slicks for use in rain or in soft soils should they have to venture off pavement.

lot of the punk kids around here have done that, along with lowering them down to inches off the ground, why waste a HD truck? Ought to be fun in a good rain!

@JoeM(GA); There are very few things that aggravate me more than a slammed truck. I'm all for "It's your property do what you want with it." but when I see one I have a visceral GRRRR.

I can't understand some of the things people do to there trucks. But yes I think one fat tire instead of two thin tires is the trend.

After being in the tire business over 20 years, I can only say "God I HOPE NOT". Probably one of fords better ideas like the 6.0 diesel and the Firestone tires their engineers designed years ago.

I kind of like that picture Steve posted but then again I always liked the pro street look for hot rods. We have a dually for farm work so personally on a work truck I wouldn't do it. If it was just for running on the highway hauling a pulling tractor or antique show tractor or a race car maybe.

I refuse to work on those at my shop. If they would do that to a truck then I don’t want to touch it. Don’t mind straight pipes in stock locations just cannot stand the stacks

most of the super single wheels and tires, when the tire blows, you hafta buy the rim new too. comes as a package deal. when i was looking for a dually to b uy, there was one dually on a lot for sale that had 22.5 tires all the way around on it. looked a bit wierd! i didn't test drive it, but i'm pretty sure the ride was not good! the wheels were modified to fit the truck.

I picked up a single hook wrecker the other day, would look nice on Chrissss new ride ! I'm hoping I'll find a Willys FC-150 to put it on though...

That does look nice. They say image is everything.

I would want to go with single narrow tires,
outboard as far as possible, and
remove or reduce the wheel well humps in the bed.
And lower if possible.

Got a DUMB looking truck around here. Really short, really really wide rear tires, but the suspension not lowered. Looks like 2 feet of clearance from the top of the tire to the fender. Sticks out to the side by over a foot per side. I’ve followed it and seems to nearly take up the whole lane. Have seen him curb it turning corners.

Oh, and yes, pipe sticking up right behind center of cab.

Many years ago I was hauling petroleum with an Ex EXXON truck. It had super singles everywhere except for the steering. I would legally carry 9,000 of gas and 7,500 gallons of diesel or fuel oil. As mentioned above is was scary in the rain, when loaded, SUPER scary when empty.  Surprisingly it would do well in snow when loaded, although after unloading it wouldn't move on flat ground.
Most use them to lower tare weight when they have more truck than necessary for the job their doing. Case in point: many around here are hauling cement locally with Large CAT powered stretched Perterbuilts & Kws with nearly campers for sleepers when they are home every night and getting paid by the ton. Most are barely hauling 24 tons and quite a few are only loading 23 or less. Even at then they have difficulty getting the axle loading legal. The truck I was in before I retired was averaging a 27 ton payload. It had duals and steel rims on the inside. When bulk hauling a heavy truck is not your most efficient truck.
If it was fun to pull in LOW gear, I could have a John Deere.
Real pullers don't have speed limits.
If you can't make it GO... make it SHINY

Was following a grain hauler the other morning , a super single started coming apart right after he passed me, rubber, cords steel wire etc was flying he just went faster- then the sparks started flying - Id flash my lights , he never stopped, finally after 10 miles it was a real spark show, he finally did stop on the road , he said he knew it was going on and hoped he,d lose the tire- wth ! Rim was shot I left shaking my head,,

I worked in the spring driving a low boy hauling a loader and operating it loading spreader trucks applying lime to fields. The truck trains hauling lime to the fields were conventional long nosed sleeper road tractors hauling 50 ton loads. One truck was equipped with super singles except for the steering axle. He couldn't pull into the field without getting stuck! The trucks with duals all around would drive right by him and dump their loads and pull out of the field. We had to borrow a neighboring farmers tracked John Deere to pull the truck in and out as it would not go even empty and when loaded even the Case 621 D loader wouldn't move it! Until he retired lime was delivered by a Peterbuilt Day Cab driven by a big man we called "Moose"! Moose would arrive with 50 ton in 2 trailers, get out and walk into the field for a look around and say" I can get it in here but you might have to help me out empty"! I don't know what that Pete had for a motor or gearing but Moose would drive right into the field dump both trailers and drive right out! And he didn't have singles! I never hooked onto Moose!

Part of the problem is most used day cabs have small motors. Fleets order small motors for hopping around town. If you want power in a used truck you end up buying an over the road sleeper truck. Took the sleepers off a few, but the frame is still long. Had I guy tell me when you pull a trailer with super singles you dont look in the mirror because they track really bad. I like the look of the above Ford. Doesn't seem practical to me but has the same stance as my 79 Cutlass Supreme.

Trans system runs super singles on all their trucks and trailers. they haul beets from pilers to the plant only. the trucks are stripped of any weight they dont have landing wheels the sides are mesh and they dont have hoists for dupming they drive on the unloader at the plant get out of the truck it grabs the truck and trailer axles they trip the latch and tip the whole thing  45 deg to the side all the beets fall out . the truck is righted and the driver gets back in. several of my friends have drove for them in the past they tell me that unloaded on slippery roads it a real handfull . when they sell the trucks off they put duals back on. trucks are replaced every 2 years.
