For anyone that has the 3 point conversion arms that lock into the snap coupler, could you shed some light on the purpose of the tube that is chained between the lower lift arms? I made some pins to hold it where the drawbar would go, then quickly realized the chains don't prevent the arms from hitting the tires when all the way up, and it limits the down travel.
And on the topic of the arms hitting the tires, anyone have a creative solution to preventing that when there's nothing hitched up to them (other than a bungie cord)? Edited by Clayfoot - 11 Oct 2024 at 7:38pm |

the two small chains and bracket in the middle of the unit can stop the SWAY.. the bracket needs to be bolted to the tractor and adjust chains for side movement.... the BAR might be in the way for PTO shaft use on some implements. Edited by steve(ill) - 11 Oct 2024 at 7:39pm |

Where do the chains and bracket bolt to on the tractor? I pinned it up where the drawbar would pin at the bottom and back of the axle housing, but it doesn't prevent sway with the arms all the way up, and prevents lowering the arms all the way down (and squeezes then together).
I replaced the bolts for the telescoping tube with longer pins and lynch pins so it sits under the lower arms and out of the way of PTO shafts. |

yea... im not sure there is a GOOD location to fix the chains for all positions... I think you would look for a HIGH location to PIN the bracket/ chain to stop the sway when not in use... It would have to be UNPINNED to drop the 3 point for use... You either run it with out... or look for a second location to PIN to keep sway to a minimum when in use.

. To minimize sway chain problems you need to match their anchors to the lift arm pivots. Hard for snap coupler. Look at Ferguson and Ford tractors 1950-60s. Besides chains you could add bars from brackets below the fenders, but these needed to rotate on the same centers as the lift arms. Modern Kubota etc often have turn buckles from the lift bars to the axles but still in line with lift arm rotation. . |

it is a littlel work, but you could MAKE two vertical bars outside the hitch frame that are attached to the bevel gear case... the hitch frame rubs on the vertical bar if it travels too far to one side or the other... that limits side travel.

I have a Cross 3 point conversion like Steve posted on my D 15. Middle chain bracket mounts under PTO on drawbar? Brackets with a long piece of all thread. Seems I had to adjust the length of the chains ? Does work well. HTH

I took mine off my series 4 and bought a factory 3 point off a 170. It made a whole lot nicer tractor out of it.

Yeah, don't we all wish we were fortunate enough to have a Series IV to start with?
Then we wouldn't have to deal with questions like the one posted here. In my opinion, those little chains have no business being used for anti-sway purposes. I wouldn't like to rely on them to keep my Bush-Hog from swinging side to side when I'm using it on steep side hills like I have here at ny place. Besides, they are not located in a position that lends itself to that. I've always thought those chains were simply meant to keep the arms from swinging around and hitting the tires when there is no drawbar or implement attached to them.
