oh....and those folks don't have that 2 ton truck anymore either, the flatbed company that mounted the bed had to move the plastic fuel tank so the bed would fit, they put it along side the exhaust pipe on one side...going up Big Thompson Canyon in CO, the heat melted the gas tank and the truck went up in flames, burnt that truck to the ground! we were able to get the trailer unhooked and a passer-by pulled the truck away from the trailer. no horses lost!

Interesting thread. I have an unrestricted ACZ drivers license issued in Ontario. I am qualified to drive anything including doubles up to 140,000 lbs gross weight except double 53' trailers and have done so for more than 50 years. I had the same issue getting a straight answer about double towing with my RV trailer. Finally after two offices couldn't come up with an answer, they told me to call the scale. Simple answer. I can do anything the big trucks can do. My rig is a single wheel pickup, 40' fifth wheel camper, and a 12' utility trailer for the golf cart and parts. Total maximum vehicle rating add up to 31,000 lbs but I will weigh less than that. The weight on the RV axles is over 10,000 lbs. All axles and tires along with pin weight will be below maximum ratings. In Ontario gross combination weight is carried on the tow vehicle plate which in my case is 24,400 lbs. Have a farm plate which is unrestricted for personal use.  Total length is 75'. Have made the trip to Portland and then to Pontiac GOTO in 2018 with no issues and am planning to do the same to  Baraboo. Due to reciprocity, I am qualified to run a 140,000 lbs gross B train in Michigan. Should I expect any problems ?
Nothing is impossible if it is properly financed

I got pulled over once and the trooper asked about trailer weight; I carry a copy of the trailer’s rated capacity and registration now just to avoid any hassle if they check.

I just travelled to the Allis Swap meet in Missouri this past March with my Astro pulling a 40' trailer and interacted with a few officers at rest areas.  Most wanted to look at my old cabover. With NON-Commercial written clearly on the door only the one in Illinois asked to see my license. He made a comment about the NON CDL class A and said by federal law whatever my state issued, every other state had to honor due to federal reciprocity agreements as long as I was using the NON-Commercial license in accordance with guidelines as issued I could travel the lower 48 without any problem. I have the needed Sir Brake Endorsement.
The only other question I was asked was "who did all the stuff on the trailer belong to"
This same officer noticed the annual safety inspection stickers on both the tractor and trailer and said, "have a safe trip"

If it was fun to pull in LOW gear, I could have a John Deere.
Real pullers don't have speed limits.

I got the stares as to Big Blue, as the wife and I stopped for lunch when returned from Eureka Springs, MSHP and Brown Shirts in a St. Robert(Ft Lost in the Woods) FF Joint as they left walked ALL Around the Rig, MSHP noted and pointed to PRIVATE CONVEYANCE marking, NOT FOR HIRE and they walked on.  Is NOT required Licensed as a Interstate Commerce truck, is MO Beyond Local Plate, covers Truck and trailer where I am at 34,400-36,000 depending on water tanks loads.  Is still NOT a Commercial Vehicle, but as has Air brakes requires a Class A CDL for the GVWR and Air Brake endorsement for the system.  Legal 48 lower, AK and Canuckistan should I ever go there.  Truck weighs 20,000, empty trailer 14,300, M'cycle at 1000 plus sundries and crap.

Hey Dave, sorry if I misunderstood, but are you saying you have to have an endorsement for air brakes? Or do you have to have an endorsement for air brakes due to the weight?

I have a class D license, Most I haul is a 14k deck over with my dodge 2500. So far nothing heavier than my D-15 II. and maybe a smaller tractor . Been past DOT check points but never stopped. I'm in NY state so I'm a little confused about the rules myself. Used to drive just about everywhere with farm trucks with farm tags.

Is a Federal endorsement for both. Class A covers Both where a Class B can be restricted to Non Air brake units and class C is non air brake.

Our Truck and Trailer combo places it in Commercial category even as is only used personally, does not as yet require DOT Inspections of Trailer as is mot a Commodities unit even at 14,000 empty weight, is considered RV or Horse trailer. Did require marking the tow vehicle as NOT FOR HIRE. I get the truck DOT inspected as a Courtesy not a requirement.

This is a new evolution from Federal DOT as to Hot Shot haulers using ton or ton and half trucks/goose or bumper pull trailers skirting DOT rules.

I can't figure out how you think you are NON-Commercial when you are carrying parts that you are trying to sell (for profit). When you are transporting anything to sell, you are commercial. Just writing NON-Commercial on your truck or tractor doesn't mean you aren't still commercial.

A few years back, some of the local stock car guys were told by the USDOT guys that, even though they are amateurs, they are competing for prize money, they are commercial vehicles. Many of these guys were towing 40' triple axle enclosed gooseneck trailers.

I changed the plates on my pickup (Ford F-350) from commercial to passenger. If I was transporting something for profit, I would be considered commercial.

The Racing crews were fast to Correct their positions, they also no longer used Commercial Vehicles but RVs to attempt to hide and were explained no matter the Tow Vehicle, is used to gain income were STILL Commercial.  CANNOT use a RV to Tow anything other than those machines used in Recreation.
