I seen a WD about 2 weeks ago, sell for $1375 at a local auction. The buyer is a well known parts seller on ebay. Most know who I am talking about. The WD was in really nice shape, had been in a barn for a while. I heard this tractor run, sounded good.

Just for the heck of it, I bookmarked every page of that WD on ebay. Not trying to get into other peoples buisness, but was curious after seeing many other running tractors parted out on ebay.

Finished crunching the numbers on the sale of each part. I think about 80% of the parts listed did sell, the others I am not sure if they will be relisted or not. I did not see the cast housings on ebay, they must end up at the scrap yard is my guess.

Total for this WD on items sold, was $2992.46

Yep
More money in parting them out than in rehabbing them. That said, don't believe those who part them out are going to pass Bill Gates, Donald Trump, etc any time soon.

And remember how much time it takes to box up each one and attach the name and address and then drop them off at the post office.  It burns a bunch of time.

$1620 profit from sales, plus a few bucks on the shipping to compensate for the time, gas and packing material, then sell the left overs as scrap. Not to shabby, more than double the initial investment. I doubt Bill Gates or Donald Trump would sneeze at the numbers if the volume was good enough. I know it kill's us to see good tractors get parted, but when you need something for your restoration do you want a good part or one that needs repair or major work to be usable or no part at all? The people who are doing this as a business are doing us a favor in the long run.

I don't mind at all seeing a good running tractor get parted, I just hate to see them end up at the scrap yard, which is probably why our farm has looked like a scrap yard for the last 40 years. Confused  The stink of it is someday we will have a farm sale, and probably most of them will go where......to the scrap yard. Angry

Not bad for starting each one at $9.99, is it?
It is a hassle though, I know why he has the reputation as a grumpy old man.... LOL

I wanted some parts (cultivator ratchet plates and handles) from him and sent an email asking about shipping.  He never answered.  I passed on the parts and now they'll probably go to scrap.  Why won't he answer?

He had a wide front end for a D17 that I was going to bid on. I told him that I would have a freight company that we deal with come and pick it up when he had it palletized and ready to go and what would the charges be to put it on a pallet,etc.. He emailed me and told me that they had their own shippers ship the parts and that it would be 300.00 to ship that front end to me! I told him I could have it brought to me for 175.00,but if that was how he did things, then he could keep it. Now I know NOT to purchase large items from him! LOL! I do still buy quite a bit from him though. He's always made everything right or I've received good parts to begin with. Can't really complain about that. Rick

I'd like to see his buisness plan. By the number of tractors that he buys, dimantles, inventories, stores, packages, and ships. I'm sure that he has a heated shop and employees to dismantle, identify, log, photo, wright discriptions, move parts to storage, pull parts, package parts, weigh parts, and ship them.
A good buisness plan would take all of this time into cosideration plus the time to buy the tractors haul them in, the interest on the money that you tie up, Fuel, heating oil, insurance, and there is always the unexpected expenses that you have when you run a buisness. I would bet that Bill gate and Donald Trump would turn and run from this as well as any AG related buisness.
I do not know why some try to make a crook out of a buisness man. Maybe they NEVER tried to manage thier own buisness.
The universal answer to all questions is yes, how much do you want to spend?

I've never figured the 'bottom line' to parting out tractors(or cars...) to be profitable.I consider the overheads(heat, hydro, shop space) as the cost of my 'hobby', my time...something to do when I can't be 'on the land'.
Heck,I've got a '49 G here and haven't made a dime from even though blocks are suppoosed to be scarecer then hen's teeth.I'm not into the eBay thing, shipping cost are high and tearing the entire tractor into a zillion pieces, though mildly entertaining, means MORE stuff to sit on the shelf inside somewhere, instead of 1 big piece under a tarp outside.
Anyone who can make a buck parting out is  doing good, though I can see why most end up in the scrap yards, better to have $100 in your pocket than $1000 'pretend bucks when sold'.

We buy from him when the price is where we can resell to our customers and make a buck or two. A lot of the calls we get are request for parts that have no aftermarket source. If we sell a used part, and the customer is happy, they will be a return customer when they need a new part.  He has to handle nasty dirty parts, and we deal with clean new parts. Paper work, inventory, shipping, takes more time than buying and selling the part itself. David   734-320-3470

It's a good thing he's doing. I haven't needed anything for my WD (what I've got, I've gone through Fred), but if I ever do, I hope he or someone like him is still around.

On a side note, he sounds like the soup nazi on an old Seinfeld episode. If you'd question him on anything it's "No soup for you!".

I try to keep my salvage business slim and trim.  I just don't have a crew, or much land to work with.  So I have to get them cheap.  In fact, if Iwere to drop a part of my business, it would be the salvage.  Lots of work, not much pay.  You have to be near a source, auction, etc to get them in the shop cheap.

He has a couple of employees, and a shop.  Plus a yard full of implements and such.  I have bought from him a couple of times, no problems at all.  So what he gets is not clear profit, there are expenses in labor to dismantle.

I have bought parts from him, and picked them up myself in the past. Luckily, its not a far drive for me. I have always been happy with my purchases. And yes, I understand labor and overhead costs.

The down side, is that if he is at an auction, and wants the same tractor as you, might as well walk away. Also, I understand partin a tractor that has issues, but dang, this WD was as tight of an ol WD as you can find. Other than being painted once in its life, it was straight tin, ran great, and EVERYTHING was in great shape.

Sad part is a good tractor has lots of good parts.   A worn out beat down tractor has lots of worn out parts.    I remember a few years ago when he parted out his dad's D19.   Now that I don't have the heart to do, but I have parted out a tractor or two.   My one B I refer to as my free B.   I two B's with a sickle mower and one plow.   The one ran, the other had water down the manifold, froze and cracked a sleeve so it needed an overhaul among other things that were wrong with it.   I brought both home, put the best parts on the running tractor, and parted out the other one.   When I was done, I broke even on my 1000 investment.   I figured for my time it was worth it.   Since then I have more of a sentimental heart for these tractors, so now they stay and get fixed up.
Also, I have bought from him quite a few times.    He is very vague in his descriptions, and you don't get alot of questions answered.   But I have never gotten screwed from him.  In fact, one of my best deals I got on a set of D15 rims/tires from him.   By the time I paid for shipping and got them home, I had $350 in them.   The tires are mismatched but they have good tread and the rims are solid and excellent.   We all know finding a good set of D14/D15 rims/tires and wheel centers isn't easy.   I took a gamble on them and it paid off.

Just got a very good set of tires & rims, plus some other parts off a nice D17 delivered today. It was still less than one new Firestone tire and tube and mounting. I'm pretty sure it's the same guy, man of few words to say the least, but everything is as good or better than represented. It's a shame, he parted a better tractor than two of the ones I'm working on, but it will get two of my projects done and move a third one along.

Their sale price is over double their cost without much processing. Not much dissasembly time with a impact wrench. Most of the time probably spent listing and shipping. Seems like a good enough profit margin to me. Aint gonna get rich but it will put food on the table. He keeps doing it so it must be working for him.

I am glad that when I need a GOOD used part that there is somebody around willing to knock good tractors in the head and part them out because I certainly couldn't do it!

Want to see a waste? Local amateur,, oops volunteer fire dept used our tax money to purchase a decent ole WD and proceeded to totally destroy it using it as a farm accident training aide. What a bunch of idiots.

I bought a couple parts from that WD,I just wish I'd been there to bid against him on that good of a tractor,he would have had to pay for it,making less profitable for him.I do understand that some must be parted to save others, but there ought to be a limit
