What size disc should a AC 180 pull in a wheeled disc? I was thinking an 8' should do the trick or is it too big? Looking for advice from the Pros"   thanks sam

In the day, when that tractor was new, a 16 ft disc with 16 inch blades weighing probably 50 to 60 pounds per blade would have been kind of the norm. By comparison, we pulled 13 ft with a D-17.

We had a 185 and pulled a 12' for years.  Wish we still had that tractor. It had a factory canopy.

Ac45dave yeah so I am finding out they are really hard to find. So i guess "bigger is better" is the way i will have to go. my place is an old dairy farm that got subdivided before i got to it. I am trying to buy up more of the old farm ground with some success but slow progress.

Thanks again guys.

We always pulled an 18' behind the 4020. Allis's are better, so an 18' should be fine.

But seriously, a 14' would be best I'd think. I don't think the Allis engineers wanted you to run duals on a 180 so I think that in soft ground you might have traction trouble with a 16'. 14' you'd probably we ok tractionwise.

Allis dave touched on a good point. Shackratt stated he's not a farmer so let's make sure we inform him on things like loaded tires and weights along with disc sizes. I don't know if they're required for a disc or not but it's better then him having to tell the Mrs "well they said it would work"

180 will safely pull a 12' disc in any soil, without working it very hard (fuel). Up to you on adding rear weight via iron or liquid ballast to prevent wheel slip in the worst conditions.
If you are thinking 8' disc as in a 3-pt., it will play with it and not give the same results as a well built 10-12' wheeled unit where you can get more weight onto the blades.
All depends what you want to do (aggressiveness of cutting/depth) and will you be plowing first?
Do you just want to "scratch in" some broadcasted seed?
Wheeled disc gives more flexibility for me as lighter sandy loam here.
Am cutting off old worn out gangs on a A-C snap coupler wheel disc that came in a package of equipment and a D15II. Hangers, bearings and blades are shot so I will buy my own pieces to assemble/hang new gangs under the A-C framework as I want more even control (level depth) when overseeding vs. 3-pt Deere 8' unit used previously.
Just buy discs you can easily source parts for . . . . .

Thendrix -- Thanks for the Note and your right! it all comes into play.  knowledge is power !! My Ex father-in-law was an A-C man and when I helped him I used his equipment. The ole man taught me a lot over the time we worked his farm together. I only wished i would have listened to him more and more often. Thanks for the advice guys.

Timnearfortworth--the ground i am working has not been plowed in many years and some probably has never been plowed. I will plow the ground. I like plowing and disking afterwards. Gives me a sense of reason for planting deer food. I have about 20 acres or more that will be food plots. I would never go with a 3pt disc. I don't like the way they work the ground. I like a wheeled disc and with my small acreage an 8' to 12' will do me nicely. I am also going to be looking for a 4 bottom 14 to 16 inch plow to go along with my new setup. Bad thing is my ground is mostly clay and rocks so might break some stuff. I hope not. Thanks for the advice Sam
