What is the difference between these two front ends? Both tractors are Series-IV

The first one ain't a series 4 front end....from an older pre-1960 model.

Most of the series 4s I see have that first style front end on them. Are people changing these out or something? If so, why?

Well, apparently the series 4's you've been looking at were a NF from the Factory. No one in their right mind would ever take a newer WF and swap it for an old WF.

My SIV hi-clearance has a lighter front end and 5 bolt hubs. It is still different from my early series as the holes are a different spacing. My thinking is they figured the tall spindles were the weak link, so they used the lighter components.

The heavier wide front was introduced in the late Series II about SN 38xxx. They still used 5 bolt hubs until some time into Series IV.

I bought this tractor in 07 from the original owner @ his retirement sale. It was a narrow front and he sold this wide front separate which I purchased and installed. My 17 is ser.#83999,1966 model. Both the narrow front and the wide one originally had 5 bolt hubs, but I changed them to 6 bolt when I installed the new front wheels. Thanks, Mike

Looks right to me Mike.The earlier ones had a flat bar in horse shoe shape and the rear mount bracket was a flat plate.Probably see it in parts book.(agcopartsbooks.com)

Myron, I can tell you the one I have (uglier of the two) is an original tractor. I have lost count how many Series 4 d17s have the other version of front axle.
Lonn, my axle has the adjusting holes that go to one side. Theere are the same holes on the back side of the axle for the other side to adjust the right side.

Ted and AJ, since you asked... My 1967 IV gas. Note the thick wish bone. Tractor was original when we bought it.  Front view...  My 67 IV diesel. Same thick wish bone - just longer. Front view looks the same as above.  A 1965 IV gas that I pulled out of a barnyard several years ago. It don't get much more original than that. Same thick wishbone.  Neighbor's 100% untouched original Series III diesel. Stayed on one farm its entire life.  Another neighbor's Series III gas. One owner tractor and all original.  Another IV diesel from an AC collector's auction 8 or 9 years ago. Same thick wish bone.  Same auction. Pre-Series III diesel (ignore the decal). You can see the thinner wish bone.  2009 GOTO in Milton Ontario. Early D17 with thin wish bone.  I think I have proven my point. Based on what I have seen, the thicker wish bone started on late Series II models and continued into the 170s and early 175s.

I appreciate the pictures Myron and the tractor looks awesome but it doesn't answer my question on the difference of front ends. I'm not saying either is wrong or right just want to know what the difference is. Like you, I bought mine from original owner. Mine is original. I just didn't know if there were different options or what on front ends and if so what's the difference.

Think I found the answer guys. There are 10 different wide front ends that were available for the series 4 D17 according to Agco's site. Variances between diesel and gas.

That ugly front axle appears to me to possibly be a narrow tread option. The adjustment bolts on the RH side are in backwards with the nuts on the rear instead of the front. Wheel treads of possibly 50 inches?? with the narrowed version. Yes, the diesel axle is about 3 inches longer underneath the engine versus a gas.

No. Too short. A 190 front axle would be a good fit for a 180.
