Hi all,
Again, a question I know I read about at one time, but can't remember the answer to.
What is the differance between a pressurized and non presuruzed system (speciffically for a C) and how do you tell what you have?
The reason I ask, is because the new 49 C I purcaced has a original style winged radiator cap, but it has a vent hole in it like the original gas caps have. Is this correct, or is this a gas cap that was put on the radiator? Are the gas and rad caps even interchangeable? I know this is a stupid question, but I just can't remember the answer....
I know that not all of the little AC's had winged rad caps, some (like my 48 C) had plane old round caps, and I think some had the generic looking rad caps with a bump on two sides.
What had what and why? I want to learn, and make sure I have the right caps on the right machines.
Thanks for all the info and help!

Non pressurezed systems used the same winged cap on the radiator and the gas tank. None of them used a round cap. The pressurized cap has a spring and seat that sticks down into the neck of the radiator and seals on a flange inside of the neck. The presurized cap is 4 lbs. Bob

So non presurized systems would have the same winged cap on the rad and gas tanks, but the gas tank would have a vent hole, and the rad would not, correct? Or should the rad have a vent hole as well?
As for the non presurized systems not having a round cap, I have to argue with you a little. My 48 has one of these round, non presurized caps, like Tony sells here:

Using round or winged non pressureized radiator caps is the owners preference. These same caps can be used on the gas tank. They lock on the inside of the neck. They won't work on a presurized radiator neck.

my 48 C dose have a round cap, but it has the spring and seal inside the neck, so it must be a pressurised one of some sort. I always thought it was unpresurized. My mistake.
However, the 49 C I just got has a differnt rad than the 48 C. The 49's must be the NON presurize one, because it has the same mounting type as the gas tank.
I still am confused about the original winged caps though. Should the rad winged cap have a vent hole then, or not? (I know the gas one should)
I'll eventually get this figgured out! Thanks everyone for being parient.

Jacob, I don't know if it would make a difference on a non pressurized radiator as the overflow tube is below it so when the water gets hot and expands too much, it will leak out the overflow tube before it would leak out the vented hole in the radiator cap. The winged radiator cap on my 40 B does not have a vent hole on it. Hope that helps.

If your gas cap will fit on your radiator, either cap will do, old style or round cap, your choice. If it does not fit on your radiator, it is a pressurized system. |
