Is the tach for a series II D17 diesel the same as a gas?

No. I'm pretty sure the drive turns opposite between the two. There is a place in Independence Mo called Metro Speedometer that can restore/calibrate yours. If you don't have one at all, I would guess that one from a D19D would probably work, just may not be accurate.

My Diesel didn't have a tach when I bought it and none of my parts cataloges have them so does someone have a good one they would be willing to part with?

The diesel one is opposite of the gas tach. I sold one last winter. Someone on this site bought it. It was an Allis NOS. I don't remember the name right now but if I see him post I'll recognize it. He was installing it in a newly restored diesel 17. If he sees this I hope he can offer a pic of the restored tractor. I'll probably regret selling it someday but oh well.
