I have a 185 now and I'm new to diesels engines.  My manual says to use straight 30WT for oil, but it seems like a lot use 15W40.  This won't run much in the winter and will mainly be used for show.  What does everyone else use?

15w 40 is my prefered oil of choice for all of my tractors gas or diesel, working or show, winter or summer.  I am a fan of it and haven't had any problems that I think it caused yet, I would have no fear using 15w40 in that tractor, it should give you more wear protection and easier cranking, but it is my opinion and I am sure some one else will have one too.

I swtched from Mobil Delvac 15-40 to 10-30 Delvac long ago for my Kubota and my powerstroke. Much easier cold weather starts. But you may not see the below zero temps that I do. I use it year round with no problems. 15-40 might be a better choice for a very hard working truck or tractor in 90+ temps, which we rarely see here for more than a few weeks a year.

rotella 15-40 is a good choice two. also a good option if you just overhauled the engine.
