so my latest and greatest idea is to fa up an engine driven hydraulic pump and put a hydraulic motor to drive the rear axle. my question is, would i be better to drive the reaer axle directly or through the transmision with different "ranges"

As long as you just want fun and unique you'll be fine.Trying to do serious work will not be so rewarding.Ineffecient is the word.

IH tried that, didn't they?
Seems it would be good for pulling a combine or doing haying work, but not much else.

If it has a pto, why not put a hydraulic motor on that and run it from there?

Neighbors bought 2 of those little IH gas hydro tractors.Didn't have them long before trading for gear diesels.Said they were GAS HOGS!!!.Yup,hydrostatic is good for for variable speed and reversing but not hard field work. Pumping oil creates lotsa heat which is wasted energy.

Most larger tractors with hydrostatic drive still use the transmission. You need a variable displacement pup to take advantage of the hydraulic drive. Use a second pump on the back of the variable pump for the PTO

Friend of mine had a 656 gas hydro. It was a great tractor on a disc mower but as previously stated you need a fuel truck in the field.
