Got a 1920 DA \Simple garden tractor with a 20 horse Kholer - it was running great , now you can be cutting grass and suddenly it will just start smoking like a train for a bit then clear up and run perfect again , any suggestions ?

It might be that oil is being sucked into the carburetor through the crankcase breather. I am not familiar with that engine but many engines pull their crankcase ventilation from the pushrod or valve spring area. If surplus oil can't get back to the crankcase quickly enough it will get pulled over into the intake to the carburetor.

When was the last time you pulled the shields and cleaned the grass out of the fins?? Hot engines equals lost temper in the rings.
