I'm hoping somebody can save some run-around. Thought it was a "real big" issue when I couldn't steer a project D19, with the front wheels off the ground, they would turn with a long bar against the spindle. Last week went to it and removed the front end. Amazing, the steering seemed to work flawlessly when turning the stub shaft, like there was no problem. After a while I grabbed the steering wheel to discover the universal joint closest to the bell housing was rusted tight!!
So, does anybody know a part number or even size of cross I'll need to repair the joint??? I haven't started digging yet, and hoped somebody could save some time!! Thanks, Stu

I got one from DJS for my D17, fits D19 also. I choose to replace just the shaft cross bearing. $17.75. Comes with a grease zirk. Easy to install. Otherwise the entire universal joint is $130.

And they are a ***** to get off! That’s why I did just the cross bearing which is all that needed replacing anyway.

Take your time when replacing it. After removing the old one, be careful as you place caps with bearings in them. They are greased in place and must be lined up correctly before you press the cross into them. It’s a little more difficult to do while the universal is still on the tractor but that’s how I did mine. I put a small socket facing outward in from the opposite side and used a C clamp to draw it together. Worked great.
