Just picked up a d-19 and dont have a service manual yet. Where do you check/add oil to the power steering. also what oil should be used? thanks for the help nathan

If it's the same as the D-17 pull off the grille and you will see a fill plug on the top right side of the front support.

I believe that should be in front of the radiator behind the grill. Level should be 5/8" above the quadrent gear. Use type a Automatic trans fluid. JCinPA

Type A was a real early type for GM cars.
Has been replaced by Dexron Fluids. These systems on these old tractors work with almost any oil. Transmission fluid, hydraulic oil, power steering fluid and even 20w non-detergent motor oil. I believe the D-17 and D-19 have very close to the same steering units and back in the day Allis Chalmers said to just use a S.A.E. 20w oil in the power steering on the D-17. Edited by Jeff Z. No Problem, If the D-19 manual says Type A they may have found they liked that oil better than the 20w they said to use in the D-17.
Then a Dexron would be the right choice today. I remember many years ago A type for GM and F type for Ford. Chrysler was a completely different beast with 7176, ATF+3 and ATF+4. Edited by Jeff Z. NY - 15 Aug 2010 at 8:59am |

The 20w in the D17 is good because if the front seal in the pump leakes the oil goes in to the engine.

I would use the 20w engine oil. Just because of the new friction modifiers in the ATF could be hard on some parts in the pump.
