i have a d17iv that i want to restore .it burns or uses maybe 1 quart of oil when i use it say for six hours.my brother did a compession test on it and all four cylinders read 130psi.the tractor runs good otherwise .just want your opinion on what would you do.overhaul it all the way or just paint it and leave the engine alone for now.thanks john

I would say it depends on what you plan on using the tractor for, if it the main tractor in a small farming operation then yes overhaul it. With 130psi on all 4 cylinders is good. I would suggest using an oil additive with the next oil change, I have had good luck with Lucas oil additive with some of my old tractors.

I have the same problem with my HD6G dozer, except that I'm burning about 1 quart per hour.... But, I only use it about 10 hours a year (if that) so I'm OK with spending $30 in oil versus probably $1000 in parts (maybe more) and a lot of time fixing it.
How many hours are you running the IV every year?

Could be a broken oil-control ring on one or more pistons (though not too likely).
Or valve guides may be worn. If oil consumption is not a concern, then this wouldn't be a major issue either.

thanks for the replies .I only use it at my brothers farm ,maybe 50 hours a year .I will try the oil additive this spring.Hopefully it will help.Im also missing the rod,upper position control linkage and agco doesnt stock no more.the three p. wont lower all the way down .

John - I'd put a can of SeaFoam in the crankcase with your next oil change. Helped my Gleaner EIII with the 226 gas engine to free up my rings and cut oil consumption after the combine had sat (and was lightly stuck) for 15 years before I bought it. EIII too still burns a little oil but it runs too good otherwise to spend the $$$ to overhaul. I run 15W40 in it but it only is used during summer & fall.
I found out 15W40 is to thick to run in my D17 Series IV that I did give a full overhaul to. It's so tight it really pushes up the oil pressure so much it can blow the oil filter seal when it's cold out. I have to get that checked out again this spring to make sure I don't have an oil-pump bypass issue. For now I'm using 5W30 in the winter and 10W30 in the summer.
PM or e-mail my on your 3 point issue and tell me more about what linkage you are missing...I might be able to help you in both cases.
