D17-IV Governor?

I have a D17 series IV, Gas tractor. A few days ago I was BushHogging some heavy brush and noticed that when I moved the throttle leaver to reduce RPM - the engine was not I going to full idle. Over the course of an hour the speed kept increasing until it was running at1600 rpm no matter where the throttle control lever was. Thinking I had snagged the linkage in brush- I adjusted the Rod at the connection under the fuel tank. Got it up idle down- BUT - now it goes from idle to full throttle when I move the control lever 1/4 inch. It’s like their is no governor. You play with the controls and set at 1400 rpm & start down a hill it goes to full throttle. You start up hill from 1400 rpm & it slowed to 800 rpm.
      Any ideas where to start trouble shooting?

Sounds very much like explosion of the governor weights. Quit running it now and it may be too late anyway. Timing gears eat the broken pieces like hard candy.

Same thing happened to me a few years ago while bushhogging with my d-17 Serie II.
Governor weights "blew" apart.
I was very fortunate in that I was able to retrieve the pieces before there was any damage to the timing gears. It took me a lot of time with various retrieving tools and a borescope but I wound up not having to remove timing case cover which is a pretty big project.

    Just got back to look at the tractor this evening. Pulled the front cover off of the governor and inspected the weights. Both of them seam to be intact and move freely. As I moved each weight out with my finger the thrust bearing moved forward as it should.
      Any other ideas as to what might be the problem.?
       All input is appreciated!

Check linkage and make sure it's not rubbing against anything. I've seen the link going to carb run up against the engine block. I wonder if there is a spring broken between governor and throttle? Just guessing..... it's been years since I've been into that area on a D17.

Engine off, throttle wide open, adjust link between carburetor and governor by bending it down until it will just rebook.               MACK
