    Posted: 08 Nov 2024 at 5:10pm
Hi all,

I found the many posts about how to set the governor/carb linkage and often the issue is the rod between the governor arm and the carb is too long and needs to be shortened. However I seem to have the opposite issue, and the rod appears to be too short. With the engine off, I put the throttle at wide open, disconnect the carb linkage from the governor arm, and with the carb at wide open, the linkage is about 1/8" too short to reach hole in the governor arm.

The issues I am having is the throttle/governor kind of has a mind of its own. Idle is idle, however sometimes you can go all the way to about 1/3 throttle and the engine may only increase 100rpm or so. Bumping the throttle a bit more and it will suddenly rev a lot higher, around 1600rpm or so. Sometimes when you put it under load it will rev much higher than you had it set.

Look at the rod from the hand lever to the governor.... Not sure about the D17, but there is an adjustement on the "B" model to LENGTHEN and make sure the GOV is pushed all the way FORWARD... If that is OK... the "arm" behind the radiator  can be bent backward toward the carburetor to match the rod length from the carb.
Like them all, but love the "B"s.

1/8" short is not the end of the world.  That's only 1/2 a hole. In fact, the governor should work just fine but might be 50-75 RPM slow at wide open throttle. There can be no binding or rubbing anywhere of that governor linkage. I've seen cotter pins at the carburetor end not trimmed short and catching on the carb when the linkage tries to move. There should NOT be ANY SPRINGS of any kind connected to the governor linkage on the left side of the engine !!! NONE !! When's the last time the governor weights were inspected or replaced ??

The governor link rod can't be on BACKWARDS. The cotter pin at the vertical governor arm behind the generator must be on the backside of the arm.

Hmm, playing around with the carb now and I'm noticing the throttle has a bit of a stiff spot off idle, which would explain a lot of how its behaving.

I just picked this tractor up, from the looks of it, it has had quite a hard life and has had a few parts stolen off it here and there. The previous owner "rebuilt" the carb and I had to undue a lot of his work to get it to run right. I think he put bushings in the throttle shaft, they have no play but that may also be causing the binding.

Yeah, and many "carb rebuilders" don't understand how the center the throttle plate butterfly so it doesn't stick when idled down.

Something was up with the butterfly and it was binding in the carb. I just took it out and reseated it as I normally would and the binding is gone. Throttle behaves much better now and RPM seems normal.
