The hour meter works as it should, but the rpm needle spins around like a helicopter blade. When I disconnect the tach cable at the distributor, I can make it do the same.  I suppose there is something loose inside the tach, but can I get to it or ??? Any ideas? Thanks, John

Yeah, either the spring has broken, or come disconnected from the armature.

I've never had one apart... willing to bet that it'll be really obvious when you get it open... if it's a broken spring, you'll need a replacement spring, and then, probably an adjustable speed input and measuring instrument in order to calibrate it.  If it's just disconnected, it might be an easy fix.

I think most guys send 'em to the tachometer doctor down near Kansas City... anybody have a link to 'em?  I don't remember the name, but they're nice people!
