 Topic: D17 Series IV Tune-up

After the recent abrupt temperture change, I went out to see if I could get the tractors started and let them run. I went to start the tractor that was my grandpas, it's a 1966 D17 Series IV NF snap coulper that he bought new, and it sounded rough and started back firing a little. I bought the tractor from my grandma at the auction we had after my grandpa died in 2002 and the only thing that I have ever really done to it is change the oils and filters and put a new muffler on it. I use the tractor every year and haven't any problems or issuse what so ever. My guess is that it is in need of a tune up and I was wandering what kits, if there are any out there, or suggested brands or where to look or go to getting the items or parts needed to give the old girl a tune-up. Any advice will be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Echlin points, condensor, rotor and distributor cap (don't throw your old condensor away!!!) Autolite, AC Delco or NGK spark plugs (Don't use Champion)
a good set of plug wires
...and a bottle of Seafoam in the gas tank

Might also be a good time to go through the fuel system as well. Get the carb cleaned, clean out the sediment bowl and screen. Shine a light into the fuel tank to see any noticeable crud or rust. It's probably not causing your problems, but who knows then these parts were looked at last...

Roger that on everything written above, my D17 III yesterday frosted up above the carb with good old carb ice...and she backfired also...and she's tuned up perfectly!!🤔😳👍

Thanks. I'll see if I can get the parts around that you recomended and hopefully get them installed if the weather holds. First I'll check to see if there is any ice in the fuel system or tank. Thanks again.

Do you only start it once a year? How old is the gas in the tank? There could be moisture in the distributor or the carb could be gummed from old gas.

Whatever you do, DO NOT loosen the clamp bolts on the distributer and think you're going to turn it back and forth changing the ignition timing. Leave it alone unless you have a timing light and know how to use it. Gap new ignition points at .020" and new spark plugs at .025".

I use it a good 8 months out of the year and put fresh gas in it and do through about 2 tanks of gas every year and I put Stabil in the gas tank when I get done using it in the fall, I do this with all of my other tractors as well. I've tried looking up what spark plugs that it takes and there are basiclly 2 different styles, 3/8" length thread and 3/4" length thread. Not sure which one that I need, sounds like I need to take one out and measure the thread length. I have also heard of some people recomending or using blue streak points. Which is better those or Echlin points?

3/4" plugs on any series 4...…..AC Delco 45XL or 45XLS.

you said there was a big temp swing,,,,
i think it is just wet from sweating and if you get it to run and dry out it would more than likely be fine,,,,,if i was to change anything ,,,,the first thing i would change is the plug wires,,,,,if they have never been changed i bet the are ready for it
or you could take a heater (i have one that runs on propane and a fan to direct the heat) out by the tractor aim it at the spark plug side of the motor and dry it that way and then start the old gal and see how she runs
we had a big temp swing here the other day and i had frost on my rear tires right at the fluid line,,,,so they were sweating,,,along with everything else that needed to catch up to the temp,,,,i have seen water running off metal things in the barn before,,,,tractor included
just a thought,,,,but if it were me and it was running ok the last time i used it i would try the dry out thing first and then change plug wires before any plugs and points

Temp swings cause lots of BAD stuff....... water in the lines, carb, inside the distributor cap and inside the gas tank. First
off close the valve on the gas outlet and clean the screen and bowl.
Do you have an extra filter on it? This is a BIG sore spot as that can
be where a lot of water is. Put a new one in! Second, take the
screw/bolt/plug out of the bottom of the carb and drain that. You usually
get a lot of water in them with the temp swings we've had. Now what have you got? If
you want to tune it up, I'd go with the Blue Streak and get everything

Never used Sta-Bil type products again after finding it restricted flow on a couple of tractors. Turned to a red looking solid and had to run wire thru any bowl/petcock orifices to break it up during cleaning. Consider draining the fuel out now in there as this will also let you check for full flow at petcock and carb, may want to remove from tank to clean completely. Rinse tank bottom with good name brand fuel, go back together with 3 gallons adding 1/4 can of Seafoam. Once treated fuel hits that carb, with cleaned/new points set to open right and decent plugs, bettin she'll pop and run fine.
Everything gets stored with name brand gas (no more convenience store gas) and a good slug of Seafoam for me. Far less headaches . . . .

If it hasn't had a tune up since 2002, changing all the electrical stuff certainly won't hurt.
