It will sometimes turn over once and I will let up and try again a few times and it will start.  Battery must be at full charge to whirl it.  The cable from the solenoid to the starter will get real hot almost immediately.  With a new battery it still drags before it takes off.  So far I have replaced the solenoid, the cables from solenoid to battery and to the starter, and a new battery key switch and starter button.  I am leaning toward it being a tired starter but would appreciate other ideas before I shell out that kind of cash.  thanks

Could be starter problems like worn bearings that are letting the armature drag on the field pole pieces, worn brushes that don't have good contact with the commutator, bad windings, or corroded commutator.

First thing to do is a voltage draw test, on the starter, on the tractor...Wink

If the cable never use to get hot I'd lay odds on it being the starter. It shouldn't cost a fortune to have the starter rebuilt.

I will check the voltage.  Does anyone know of someone on this forum, or elsewhere, who rebuilds starters and may have one for an exchange.  Thanks

Check your Yellow Pages for "starters, rebuilding." I believe SteveNJ does it too.

SteveNJ does indeed rebuild starters. Good guy. Get hold of him and see what he says.

Finally  put on a new starter and it starts fine now.  Is the old one worth anything to anybody to rebuild?  Shipping would be a little costly I reckon.
