I am looking for recommendations for a muffler for my D17 series 4. I want one that’s well built and that sounds good and fits like original. I like the looks of the Nelson and everyone says they sound good but I can’t buy $200 for a tractor muffler.

That is your only choice. That or a $50 Stanley that sounds terrible! Pay the extra and get the Nelson, you will be happy you did. I have a Stanley on mine and hate it!

Bob, if you want it to LAST AND WELL BIULT you're going to have to put out a few bucks. I highly recommend the nelson muffler available from Alex09(WI) on this forum.I bought one for my serires III d17 from him myself and don't regret it one bit.You really do get what you pay for in most things.Buy two or three cheap ones or buy one nelson and get a good product. The muffler was 157.00 plus shipping.I ended up having $175.00 invested, delivered to the house. Here's the link to his thread on these mufflers. https://www.allischalmers.com/forum/ive-been-talking-with-nelson-muffler-co_topic166328_page2.html?KW=d17+muffler

x2 on the Nelson muffler. It will out last the Stanley mufflers and make the drive of the tractor is much more desirable. Im amazed at how much more I am using our D17 since we put it on.
Its worth the money hands down in every way.

I agree with all these guys, the Nelson is so much quieter / heavier than the Stanley. In the big picture, 175 dollars ain't much.

If you take care of it buy at least putting a can over the stack when parked but better yet parking under roof,it will out last you. It's a one time buy....

Okay so a Nelson it will be. Kinda of excited to see what all the fuss is about. I am in process of getting a hold of Rick now. I am not a cheap skater I just thought there might be something out there I didn’t know about and I try to save when ever possible. My farm is all one piece here near the house so my tractors never sit out . Thanks for all the info I will report back when I get one installed.

Nelson is the best! As you go thru life, remember 2 words, "no regrets".
Good luck and enjoy the Nelson. |

Had a 17 muffler(Nelson) on my 45 back when it did all the heavy tillage(yes there's an oval hole in the hood). Vibration broke it up after some yrs. Was nice to have quiet power. Has a Nelson 45 back on it. It's a fart around tractor now and I like that bark!
