So I'm looking for some pricing advice on a couple of D17 series 3 tractors. One has had the engine redone and a new paint job 5 or 10 years ago and is in perfect working order. The other is pretty much a parts tractor. The engine block is cracked in 6 places. Otherwise all other parts of the tractor are in good shape.

New tires all the way around are at least $1,000. A wide-front axle (to me) is worth an extra $500. An engine that needs a block would cost me $1800 in parts to fix (complete OH)with no labor. If you have to hire someone to do the engine for you? another $1,000 minimum. So a D-17 that needs $2,800 spent on the engine is worth?? almost nothing, right??

Would I be better off taking that one and just selling it for scrap?

You would be better taking it and parting it out. Quote a bit of parts money to be made if your patient.

I would offer $3500 for the pair. I would keep the parts tractor as it might prove very useful. I honestly would probably end up fixings the parts tractor when I had time just because I could...

You could always find a nice Cummings 4BT and drop in place of that bad motor on the other d17 I always thought that would make a nice efficient diesel tractor.   Not knocking the allis diesel just guessing a modern one has some advantages.
