Finally hoping to get the old girl started after a longer than ever expected paint job. The manual says use automatic transmission fluid in the system. Is that still the fluid of choice nowadays with all these universal oils? Thanks in advance. Ryan

If the leaks are fixed, ATF works well. Especially in colder weather.

I found this to be true as well........hydraulic fluid is a little slow in real cold weather and tends to "pump out" of the breather until it gets warmed up a bit.

I had a series 2 17 and had trouble with foaming out of the breather plug . As some one on here said be sure the hydraulic fluid is anti foaming . I dropped the oil I was using and got universal hydraulic from NAPA that was anti foaming and problem cured . Ran it blading snow in winter and was not stiff when cold .

I followed the Dr’s advice and used the universal Hy-Tran in my early D17D. I can’t really speak to the cold weather function since it parks in a heated shop.
If you’re getting foam out of the breather you have a leak on the suction side of the pump between the reservoir. |
