I have a d17 that I just changed the clutch and it seemed to be running fine but after starting it when it was flooded- bad carb and floats stick - it ran for about a minute and than stalled. When I tried to restart it just clicks at the starter. After troubleshooting shooting the electric I found that the motor was stuck and I can’t move it by trying to turn the pto or rocking it. Removed the starter but that didn’t help. Any ideas/advice on where to look next would be greatly appreciated.
Mike

Could it be flooded with one or more cylinders full of gas. Leon

yep... pull the spark plugs and see if that helps... also check fan belt / alternator / generator to make sure the bearings didnt lock up..
assume oil level and antifreeze level are GOOD ? Edited by steve(ill) - 15 Feb 2025 at 4:33pm |

I have the plugs out with no luck but will take the belts off next and see what happens. How about the governor and distributor drive. Trying every thing possible before tearing into the motor itself. Can you think of any thing we might have done while replacing the clutch. It ran fine for at least a week after the clutch rebuild with no sign of problems. Oil good but haven’t looked at antifreeze yet

The foot clutch worked fine before all this ?? If so, place the tractor in road gear with the hand clutch fully forward and have someone sit on the seat and see if you can roll the tractor in road gear with the foot clutch pedal pushed clear down. If you can, the engine has a problem.

Do Dr's test.... then this is your next move.. another check might be to pull the valve cover and look at the valves to be sure nothing dropped ??

Agree with Steve.
Re; A while back i had overhauled a 170. Was running fine on first fire up so took it out for a drive around the yard. Shut it off and let sit a while. When I went start again it acted like you describe. What I found was two valves had seized in their guides. Piston subsequently made contact and bent the valves and the push rods as well. |

The poster needs to understand that "seized" means the engine will not turn EITHER WAY !! A situation where stuck open valves stop the rotation (or an exploded governor) the engine will turn backwards a certain amount of degrees.

There might be a slim chance that a piece of hardware or something got lodged between the ring gear and the casting. I'd look over the clutch area really well first if that's what you last touched before the issue happened.

So what Tool got left in the Clutch Housing Area after installing the NEW Clutch? How did you secure the Flywheel while you Torqued the Pressure Plate Bolts? G |

it will not move in either direction when using a pipe wrench on the pto. It is locked totally in the clockwise direction and will move very slightly in the counterclockwise direction. When trying to move it in counterclockwise it will move maybe an 1/2 inch and when the pressure is released it moves right back. Haven’t tried the dr thought yet and moved it into the barn by leaving it in neutral but will give that a try next. Didn’t think we left anything in the clutch area but will be taking inspection plate off the bottom to see if possible . will also pull the valve cover to take a look in there
Really appreciate all the feedback as it is giving me ideas on where to look next Mike

A pipe wrench on the PTO is poor leverage, like 1 to 3. Better leverage is one rear wheel off the ground and the transmission and hand clutch in ROAD gear with 2 people trying together to rotate the wheel off the ground. Block the other rear wheel front and back.

Any chance somebody drained the Engine Oil and forgot to put fresh oil back in. Pull the Engine Oil dipstick and check. G |
