Okay, rings are here from AGCO, gaskets from OK, rod bearings from OK are on the way. I even saved so much money over NAPA that I could afford a new tach cable assembly. Thank you all for pointing me in the right direction - Jim was a great help.
So.........putting the rings on today, soon as the rod bearings get here I'll put the pistons in. I was worried that deer season would interfere but managed to put down a nice 6 pointer behind the house yesterday, so the pressure is off.
The head bolts are grade 5 - torque is 90 ft-lbs isn't that a bit high for a 1/2" grade 5?
thanks,
Creek

grade 5 1/2 inch dry 90lbs oiled 65 lbs .I take them to 90lbs oiled but you suppose to reduce it 20 percent for oil. 1/2 grade 8 goes over 100lbs. I buy 1/2 grade 8 all thread to make head studs for my puller but thats not necessary.

Sounds like my best bet is to buy some grade 8's to be safe.
I got the rings on the pistons yesterday, in between deer hunting with the Old Boy.
Hopefully the rod bearings will come in today and I can set the pistons tonite.
I'm looking at the oil pan gasket set - it has what looks like 4 of the flat end pieces. Isn't 2 all you need? Do they give you 2 extra? It doesn't seem like they would be that generous.....I'm really scratching my heed here trying to finger out what the other 2 are for...........?
thanks

Yup, two is all you need. Musta thought you might need more. They look to long when you fit it to the pan, but dont cut em off as they compress when the pan is tightened.

Well things are looking up, hopefully will have the old gurl running this weekend......dunno how many times I have said that!
I took the starter apart last nite as I remembered it wouldn't disengage when it was last running, we had to push her in the shop. The starter was full of mouse crapola and the bendix looks new but won't go back to the disengage position. Can't figure out what the helms might be wrong with that or how to take it apart. The worst part is my wife just ebayed a whole raft of 50's and 60's era shop manuals for Delco Remy starters and distributors for her partners. What was I thinking?
Nobody around here I can find rebuilds starters anymore. I'm going to try to take it apart farther tonite.
What was that someone said - "if you can't fix it with a hammer you've got an electrical problem..."
cheers,
Creek

Oil pan end gaskets are soaking up some water today so I can form them as they dry, I've ordered a new starter bendix and a local shop is looking for a brush kit. For some reason I can't find a dang p/n on that starter. I've gone over it with a fine tooth comb and there just isn't a p/n to be found. Makes getting a brush kit tough, sort of have to resort to show and tell.
No mail yestiday so rod bearings should be here today.
