I need to put brake linings in series 1 D17. I have bottom pins out. What next? Does the piece that is hooked to the rod to pedal come out? Or can I take out cotter pins and snap rings from the top to have the brake shoes come out? If that actuator piece comes out next, how do you get it back together?

Unscrew rod that goes to pedal, loosen adjuster nut, loosen centering screw on back, unhook springs, unhook two halves, and remove. MACK

They fish in from the top. Can't remember if one goes before the other or not. Do what Mack says.If you break the pull rod,fix it once out.

It really helps to have the manual when working on these old tractors.
This is from the WD/WD-45 Manual but is basically the same as the D-17. ![]() Edited by Brian G. NY - 17 Apr 2018 at 11:20pm |

I had put the WD/WD-45 instructions on this site a long time ago but when I took a look at the D-17 manual, I found there was enough difference to warrant posting it as well.

If the bottom pins came out without a big fight you are well on the way to getting this job done. Brian gave you all the rest of the info you need, good luck!!

I had to reweld my tabs on the pin 3 times on one side and 5 times on the other. It was a pretty good fight. Put Kroil on it and tap it back and forth every time I walked by it for a week. I have never done one so I don't know if that was an easy one or hard. But 60 years. Bad thing is I remember the day it was new.

Although it may not seem so, getting the rod length right is very important as it provides the optimum amount of leverage to the shoes for maximum stopping power.
The same goes for the adjustment of the shoes....it pays to take the time to jack up the wheels to assure the shoes are as close as possible but not dragging.

Thanks for the pictures and the tip on rod length. I had read all I could find about doing this. I didn't know about unscrewing the rod til the guy mentioned that and saw the parts breakdown. I do have a broken stud in housing from axle tube. That will be a tussle.
