    Posted: 02 Nov 2016 at 8:00pm
I'm switching my d17 series iv from the old generator to an alternator and running into some problems. I did a lot of research on past posts on this and decided to go with a delco 10si alternator as this seemed to be the most common for this conversion. I am switching the pulley off the generator to the alternator in order to miss the belt for the power steering but I cant get the pulley off the generator, I got the nut off but cant get the pulley to pull off of the shaft. Is it threaded on or pressed or just stuck? Any Thoughts? I am a little reluctant to heat it with a torch because the metal is so thin. Also what has anyone done in the past to mount the alternator? I was hoping to be able to shim the front mount forward and drill a hole in the bracket for the motor mount but after measuring the bracket on the alternator isn't long enough to clear the motor mount.

The pulley should pull straight off, its retained by the nut.

When I put a 10SI on my gas 4020, I bought (through the auto electric shop) the smallest wide pulley so I could use the same belt because the alternator is fatter than the generator and wouldn't swing in enough to use the standard fan and water pump belt. I also found an extension piece for the pivot bolt of the alternator that extended it to the same length as the generator so I could used the original generator U bracket. I did have to drill new mounting holes in the generator bracket to line up the pulleys.

It's just 'stuck'... I'd prop up the genny, pulley side up , on 2 blocks about an inch from the bench.Get a bolt or piece of steel rod and whack the genny shaft, smartly. The genny should drop down.OK, maybe 2 or 3 whacks it's been on awhile !!

I used CS-130 style alternators for my D-14s, smaller more power(not needed though) and no 'issues' with hitting the tin....got to use the original size belt too...

BTW to get the nuts off, I use an air wrench. One small burb and it's off, easy.

I already tried the propping method but with a 3 lb hammer and a punch and no go.

Travis,
Maybe soak in wd40 then try a air hammer on the end of the suspended generator? Things get stuck pretty tight after many years in service.

Also if anyone has a picture of the bracket they made for the alternator, I can PM you my number so you could text it to me if that's easier.

Be careful pounding on a Generator or Alternator. All that does is rattle things up inside the unit and possibly knock a brush outta whack. That's all that's needed to mess up the com plate when the engine is started and things start to spin around side breaking or chipping a brush or bending a brush holder. The bestest way to remove a stubborn pulley is a LITTLE heat and a puller. Over the years, I've had some tough pulleys to remove as part of the rebuilding process. It is challenging to say the least. Sometimes you make up new swear words. If worst comes to worst and you can't get that pulley off, we offer a CNC heavy duty replacement pulley pretty cheap that fits all the Delco Alternators. HTH

Thanks Steve!, I got the pulley off exactly like you said "a little heat and a puller" but now have to figure how to mount the alternator in place of the generator.

I've got a drawing of the bracket I made for my S1. Not sure if it would work on yours as I don't have power steering.
cheers,

I've read the thing about using a bracket for a 170, I can find one anywhere online and I'm not close to any scrapyard. Anyone know where I can get one?

Use the D-17 S4 gen pulley but leave the cooling fan off. This helps clear the power steering belt.
