My D-15 II has begun to slip out of 3rd gear. Can there be any adjustment to correct this problem or is it ineviable that the transmission must be disassembled and the gear replaced. Thanks for any advice.

I reworked the shift rails on my D14 after it jumped out of 3rd, its been good ever since. Takes a little finess, better to try it now than later after its worn to far. HTH

I modified the shift rail on my D14 in 2006 and it was pretty bad. It hasn't slipped out since. I did Herb Metz's D14 that way a couple months ago and it worked good. I also fixed a 175 that way this summer and it was real bad. If you want to pull the side plate and send it to me I can modify it and send it back. Thanks JP

Did you drill another hole closer to the end of the shaft for the fork lock screw to seat in? My I-600 jumps out off first and fourth.

you might also check for extra slop in the lower gear stack. |

If you move the fork toward 3rd then it won't go in 2nd far enough. You have to move the detent grooves farther apart. That requires some tedious welding, grinding and filing to get it just right. I have been thinking about buying a used side plate and modifying it and selling them in exchange for your old one.JP

Jack, you could have a new business rehabbing those shifters. I've got a D14 that won't go into 3rd (most of the time) and, if it does, pops right back out. Is that too far gone for your cure?

I think most will agree that the transmissions that are having problems are usually worn out due to time, hard work, abuse, etc. When these trannys are taken apart the wear become pretty obvious. The "knobs' on the gears/couplers become wore down past usable, along with other wear. If your having severe problems it's time to split tractor and fix properly. My opinion on the adjustment to the fork engagement is "why not" as long as it doesn't cause other problems. My first response is "you shouldn't have to" if the transmission is in good working condition, they worked without the adjustment for how many decades???
