I'm trying to replace the o rings on the power director shaft.  Removing the inspection cover, there is a bolt and jam nut that will need to be removed.  The jam nut takes a 1 1/16" wrench but there is no room to swing the wrench through the inspection hole, so I cannot loosen anything.
 
Does anyone have any ideas?  I really do not want to split the tractor now.

You have to make the wrench work...put lever in low side.  Maybe even a socket/ratchet combination.  The tractor was assembled with tools thru that square opening....you have to figure out how to disassemble it. You can't split the tractor until after you have removed that shaft anyway.

I think the bolt/jam nut you're talking about is the one that holds the shift fork onto the shaft? If so, it doesn't need to be touched.The only o-ring my book shows is just inside the inspection cover(groove in shaft about 2" from 'the big handle').
I can send you a scan of the diagram if needed, after I have a couple more cups of coffee.

The inside setscrew must be removed to allow the shaft to slide sideways  thru the fork to be able to replace the O-rings.

I looked at the diagram in my dealer's parts cat again. They don't label the 'left side' o-ring which is misplaced on the right side of the shifter fork. NOW I see why you have to remove the nut to remove the bolt to remove the shifter to remove the shaft to replace the LEFT side o-ring!!!
Well, I learned something useful today.
