I rebuilt the carburetor on my d14 and now it only runs good with the choke half open. What did I do wrong? The idle screw makes no difference.

Having to leave the choke on is a classic symptom of having a fuel restriction somewhere. Not enough fuel, so to get the ratio right, it has to cut the air. I'd look at the jets first, then go backwards through the fuel passages. Did you replace the jets?
If it's not that, less likely, it could have an air leak or the float is way off.
If it's a Schebler, the idle screw affects the throttle butterfly so with the choke on, it won't have much effect until the choke is off. |

The last kit we got to rebuild the MS - the inlet hole the needle goes in was about half the size it should have been - compared to the old seat. We had to drill out the hole. Having said that , as stated you are not getting enough fuel of course - does it idle correctly? That is about the only thing the idle adjustment does. The main load screw - if it has one - the oem carbs did - will flood the engine when screwed out too far and stall it when scewed in. After warmup and the initital setting of 2.5 turns out - turn the screw in til rpm drops then back to where it sounds great - then an extra 1/4 turn out. The main load passage ways/jets and needle seat are the # issue .

It's probably like the others said, but start at the beginning. Is there good flow coming out of the tank?
