The front seal has a felt on one end and a lipped seal on the other.  I think the felt should go to the outside but my service book does not say.  I sure would hate to put it in backwards.  The old one is long gone.
 
I am beginning to think I should have got the IT book instead of the service manual.
 
Anyway would someone confirm the direction that seal goes in?

Look at the lip on the seal. 99% of the time there is a garter spring on them. The spring goes toward the fluid to be contained.

Just installed the front crank seal on my D12; the felt part faces out. Would assume the same for the D15 as they have similar blocks.
What this country needs is more unemployed politicians-and lawyers.
Currently have: 1 D14 and a D15S2.

I guess I was meaning 99% of lip seals have a garter spring on them. The garter spring always goes toward the fluid to be contained. I'd go ahead and install it that way. If the front cover doesn't have any alignment dowels like the B, C, and CA engine doesn't, there is a special alignment tool for the job. If the tool is not available, it can be done using the seal. That's how I did my CA 14 years ago. Stand the block up on the flywheel end and put the cover on. The seal had enough tension to position the cover. 14 years later I still have no leaks.

thanks guys.  It does have alignment dowells.  I put the seal on the crank yesterday to let it rest there so to speak with the hopes that will ease the instll a little when the front plate goes on.
