Yes. We didn't know what piece of equipment each engine went into. The engine catalog number identified how the engine was to be configured and that configuration was determined by which piece of equipment it was to be used in.

Construction used a few CUMMINS engines in some applications, but we put a LOT of 844 straight 6 ALLIS in a lot of off road equip.... Non turbo, turbo, intercooler... several options to get MORE HP for the larger equip. ....... some of the smaller ALLIS motors went into the smaller construction equip ...... i was just more familiar with the 844.

Thanks for the reply- the 844 was tried and true - and couldve worked in the Big Al - have heard just rumors that the the twist of the frame etc took it toll, but then also taking a 350 engine and turning it up to 750 hp- would wreck it too , im going with the 750 hp diagnoises

YEP... the 844 non turbo was put in the HD 16 dozer about 275 HP ..... then the turbo verson at 325 HP was put into the HD21 - 21C Dozers for many years... Higher versions with intercoolers were use in the 945 wheel loader and the 260 Scrapers.. up around 350- 375 HP.. .... good motor in a lot of applications !
tried for several years to use the 844 in the 460 scrapers... set up to almost 400 HP... NOT a good plan ! Edited by steve(ill) - 06 Sep 2021 at 3:53pm |

NOPE... Broken cranks, blown motors, etc... Scrapers set at 390 HP did not do so good.. Eventually replaced by DD 12v-71....
Was a pretty good motor at 325- 350 HP........ I think high idle was 2100 rpm. Max torque i though was in the 1800 rpm range.
