   I've located a reasonably priced Series IV gas, that has a knock in the motor, and I have a Series III diesel with a fresh rebuild on it.  Are there any major obstacles that would make the swap not worth the effort, short of changing the originality of the tractor?  I wasn't sure if there were any gear ratio differences between the gas and diesel, ect.  Thanks

I think the torque tube shaft is shorter on the diesel.   MACK

Mack is right. See the plate between the clutch housing and engine back plate on this tractor;

Don't let that detail stop you. Not hard to work around.

Yep, different part #'s gas vs diesel. Question is will the series 3 shaft work in a series 4? I'm guessing without looking that you'll need to find a shaft from a series 4 tractor to make the swap work.

Just swap the rear ends, that will give you the series 4 3point and keep the diesel fuel tank and sheet metal, frt end togher. The side frames and sheet metal is longer on a diesel. the difference in the shafts is diesel vs gas, series don't matter.

I am a bit of the square peg in the round hole guy. But I don't think I would attempt this one either. Series 4 is just too much different than the other D17s. I took a series 1 and went from diesel to gas and that was quite a job.

If you got alot of time on your hands this job would probably get it used up.

I don't have my book handy, but I think a series 3 diesel is the lowest produced diesel version. Harder to find than a series 4 diesel just no demand.

Doesn't the series 4 have a hollow input shaft for the trans with the PTO drive shaft being directly splined to the flywheel?

   Thanks for all the responses guys...looks like the smartest thing for me to do is hope to find the real thing someday.  There's nothing wrong with the Series III, and I have it down to just needing the paint work done at this point...finding a donor Series IV got me excited for a moment...too much coffee, I guess?  Thanks again, Eddie

Buy the series IV and find a good running gasser to stick in it.
