    Posted: 19 Feb 2011 at 10:41am
I have a G that was sloppily converted to 12 volt with an altinator, reused auto harness no switch and chopped up sheet metal. i'd like to convert it back to 6 volt.  I have a good starter but what other parts do I need?  Any advice on how to go about it?  I see three different wiring harnesses offered on e-bay...at least three with widly different prices.  Who offers a good harness at reasonable price?

You would need the generator, a cut-out relay, the 3 position light switch, a "6 volt" coil and new light bulbs along with your new wiring harness. I would just about bet Steve B at B&B would have a package deal for you to do the change. I don't know what is reasonable to you but it won't be cheap.

The 12 volt alternator would work beautifully at 6 volts with a special regulator made for 6 volts, but originally it had a generator which you need. And the associated 6 volt regulator. Wiring can't be terribly complex so a harness may be overkill unless its assembled with lots of loom or tape.

Unless you're dead set on making it all original, I'd stay with 12 volt. One of the newer Chevy alternators (cs120 series,4 pin) should fit 'under the hood' without altering the sheet metal.Wiring of a G is very simple, easy to get at and not that difficult.Just take one wire at a time and learn as you go.Nice thing about 12 volt system, parts are cheap, easy to get.You can easily 'do it yourself' in an afternoon WITH a couple of coffee breaks.

I don't remember ever seeing a G with an alternator that didn't have the sheet metal altered.

Does anyone know of one that hasn't?

Dusty, I know the alternator from the Mitsubishi diesel engine in a Toro groundkeeper ZTR will fit. Was ready to toss it on, then sold the Toro. Being bored, I rebuilt the G's generator and tossed it back on. Maybe it's a CS110, cs100 ?? but the newer GM alternators should be doable, much smaller in diameter.
If I still had my G I could easily fab it up....bored with Winter again...

Thanks Guys.

Now i'm still unsure about what to do.  I do like things looking origina and the whacked up sheet metal bothers me. I have a great starter/generator guy in forest Lake MN.  Think I'll spend some time with him.  Anybody parting out a G with used parts I need for 6-volt?

I took the 6 V generator off my G to a starter/gen guy. He said it was beyond repair. So I began looking for another. They seemed to be very scarce. So I took the generator to another, older, wiser starter/gen guy and he rebuil it. My point is that they may be very hard to come by.

Thanks, Bob.

Do you know if the generator used on the G was the same one used on the B & C? Was it used on other brands of tractors?

I believe the G generator is shorter in over-all length than the B,C gennys.
