    Posted: 30 Dec 2017 at 9:23pm
Well, it's been cold here in Michigan and another 15 degree (or so) day. I needed to move some hay, so I got the 6080 running in the barn without much trouble and let her warm up about 7-10 minutes. After I backed it out of the barn, I moved one round bale about 25 yards, set it down, put her in reverse, and she just kind of died. I tried to restart to no avail. Battery seems to have plenty of "spin" to it. I'm guessing fuel is the issue, and likely the cold is the culprit? I do buy "Premium Diesel" which I think has cold-weather additive. Any suggestions for me, now that the tractor won't re-start and she's outside where I don't like her to sit?

Thanks in advance,

Tom

Look for frozen fuel lines, filters.

Probably gelled up, may have to change the filter and put some number one in it.

Are frozen fuel lines different visually from normal?

Once things are "gelled up", can heating the tractor up bring things back to "normal" or do I still need to replace filter, etc.?

TIA,

TF

Go get new fuel filter (s), and a bottle of what the parts store has on hand for a Jelled Diesel fuel, ( power service has #911 in a red bottle) get enough fuel treatment to put in your fuel barrel..
If it has spin-on filter Fill filter about 1/3 of the stuff, fill filter with fuel, poor rest of stuff in fuel tank, use something to stir fuel in tank. Remove sediment bowl if it has 1 and see if fuel comes out of tank, if it does try to use the fuel primer to move fuel through the filter and into injection pump. If getting fuel at bleeder, loosen 1 or 2 lines at the injectors and crank engine, if it sputters or you see smoke in muffler tighten lines and try to start.
Good luck, been down that path in the past.

Start by disconnecting the rubber fuel line at the filter that comes from the tank. If it freely flows fuel, the filter must be frozen. If there is no fuel flowing, it's frozen at the fuel tank outlet valve.....follow the line back to the tank.

your premium diesel won't be "winterized' unless your fuel man did it lately. It doesn't just come that way on it's own and 15deg might be enough to jell straight #2. Hopefully there is NO biodiesel involved here.

What Steve said.  Around her you can buy "premium" fuel in the summer.

I always wondered if there was something about it besides the price.  LOL

I heard that the fitting on the bottom tank will ice up and restrict the fuel flow. Never personally had that issue with ours but heard others having it.

Start at the tank work forward find out when you have no fuel ours is always frozen in the tank   I Took the tanks off and change the outlet hole to three-quarter inch with a plug directly below it solve my problem     in that temperature we put kerosene in with diesel fuel   also bought a heating tape that goes around the filter eBay.   In 100 gallon tank we would put 10 gallons of kerosene total of 110 gallons if we do not use it all by April used it on brush piles fires if it was not used in winner. Could be your diesel fuel.  Are you getting it from a big barrel on the farm?  Those things pick up lots of condensation when they are half full or less.  Some of those nozzles also get rain water in them very easily.  All that moisture winds up in the tractor's fuel tank.  I'd give the tank a good cleaning and change out the filter.  Refill with FRESH diesel from a station and also throw in plenty of diesel fuel conditioner.
My 6080 has been running the snowblower for years.  No problems so far (fingers crossed too).

Sheesh, wish it would warm up 30° so we could be at 15 degrees too....

IF your barn is heated, push her back in there if you can, put in the 911, and after a few hours change the filters if you have them, and/or put a 50/50 mix of fuel/911 back in the filters, as suggested above.  911 will only last for a while, you will need to get some other additive in the tank asap also.

Also plug in the block heater, even though you are heating the coolant, the block will radiate a small amount of heat into the pump and lines near the engine.  A good thick tarp will help as well.  Take a flashlight and look down in the tank, if it is cloudy, and if you have one of those oil pan magnetic heaters, throw that on the fuel tank as well. (Assumes a metal tank, not all that familiar with the 60xx series tanks)

Have a 6080 that used to gel up all the time, fuel treated, fresh filters, still would do it. Finally put on a new rubber fuel line from the tank to the filter housing (I think) and didn't have issues after that. Still treated the fuel or run a blend of #1 and #2 but the new line helped a lot. Got from Agco a couple years ago, the line for a 6060 may be shorter, I had to return the first one the dealer sent me cause it wouldn't reach.

if not already there, could you add some 'side shields' to guide the radiator heat along engine and bottom of tank and filters ?
I did that with my D-14 to eliminate the carb icing syndrome 3 days ago.
just an idea..

Sound like fuel jell, if you can put a tarp over it and a heater under the tarp you may be able to get it running and back to the barn. Be careful what you use for heat, don't want to start a fire.

Ok take your fuel filter off the spin on base, if fuel is running out of the base, put on a new filter cuz your old one has water in it. You need to be running some antigel in your fuel, Howes or power service, whatever. If fuel does not run out of the filter base, your froze up in the line or possibly the valve at the tank.

DiyDave, those sound great, but where do you stop. If it is good for the fuel, then how about the engine and trans filters as well? I run a oil pan heater, but that doesn't do anything for the filter until things get warmed up.

My 6080 used to have a brass shout off valve where the fuel line connected to the tank.  Fuel would constantly gel there.  Would add diesel treatment, wrap the shut off in insulation and shop rags and towels, nothing worked.  Finally  I unscrewed the valve from the tank and replaced it with a poly elbow, has never gelled since.
