For some reason I have a hankering to get a COE or some 60's/70's semi single axle. Don't really have a need, just a want. Would use it to pull a 25' Goose. Maybe in the future get a short low boy trailer for heavier hauling. Just tractors to pulls and such.
Looking at the Ford or GMC Cab overs, I like the shape of them. Have heard that shifting was a constant issue with them ? due to the long linkage. How were the Diesel/gas motors of this era?
Otherwise a nice IH early 70's COE would be nice. Maybe they right like crap, never been in one.
I like something with a short turning radius as I have to get into some tight places.

Ford made those cabovers up into the early 90's and they were virtually unchanged.

still lots of fire trucks out there that are COE's, all makes. and they would have the best maintanence and low miles.

Most will be gassers.Don't know what deisel option may been.Lot of Chevys will be 366.On earlier(60's) Chevys ,the gear stick reached in cab so no linkage issue. Find you a later model air ride single axle day cab with a little Cummins or be prepared to wish it later.

From recent discussion about CDL still many things are different state to state so you would need to try to read your states "rule book".
May be able to stay under the 26,000# and licence it as such. But the air brakes probably means you would need a CDL. Many mid west states are good with farmer exemptions on the CDL,would sure be nice if your state has such a policy.

Here you can have air brakes without CDL as long as it's a single axle and under 26,000 lbs

You see lots of Single axle rigs around pulling livestock or GN's with hay with Farm use tags. Antique Tractor pulling isn't quite farming though....

Those little Cab Forwards were really popular at one time for city delivery trucks and small tractor trailer units. Yes the shift linkage gets a bit iffy feeling and not because worn out just long reach and lots of connections for slight wear that adds up. White or now Volvo still makes one called an Expeditor for Trash service.
Fords of that style usually had 3208 or 1160 or 3160 Cat dependent on year and whether or not had engine swaps. Last units built had the Ford straight six diesel but they were primarily at the freight companies as Roadway. GMs could have the 8.2L Fuel Pinchers in them if were diesel, most were gas as noted. IHC could have gas or 466 engines and yes parts are as scarce for these today as our own Allis units. Last Fords built were early 90's, last GMS before went to the Euro Cab trucks was in the 80's. IHC quit marketing them around the same time as Ford.

Common terminology is not Cab Over but Low Cab Forward. Cab overs were straight up and a lot heavier series.

Shen I ran the vehicle section on the Air Force we had 20 of the f800 fords like in the picture. They we miserable things to drive underpowered with Cat motors and horable to service. I've got two Sterling cab foward sat work now and aMac cab over at the farm. While they will turn slightly shorter than a conventional cab they are miserable to drive. Try climbing in and out all day for harvest and you'll never let anyone even give you one. They usually sell real cheep.

Yes the Fords were C7 & 800's. The GMs were L series Viking or Tiltmaster.

After doing all I could to run them down in the other thread I gotta say you will love a cab over. Visibility is unmatched, you'll be the only one out there with one and they are just kewl. Always reminded me of a steam locomotive leaning into the pull and walking away. I've always liked them they just got some hinky quirks to them. Maneuverability alone makes them worth having around.

I drove plenty of them two-story trucks when I was a kid,,,,,,,,, but after I growed up around 50, I purty much drove truck from the ground floor.....................

Had a Viking 60 - 1966 vintage with a 327 and 4 speed - rollback tilt bed - single axle - carried my IH 460 to grading jobs rather than tag trailer and dump truck -
Hauled my HD5G on it a few times also but the GVW ended up around 32,500 and as license was 27,000 -
Ended up putting a 5 speed in it and then replaced cab with later unit as rust got to it

About 30 years ago when I lived in Whitehorse, Yukon there was a 1953 Mercury COE like last one posted that appeared to have been sitting unused for years. It looked in mint condition compared the one on the Atlanta craigslist. Not much rust in the Yukon. I did think about trying to buy it but it was too much of a heavy duty model for my needs.

My son had one, think it was a 700 with a 429 gas and an Allison auto trans, not bad to drive, a little rough and lots of gas but good power, he had a dump box on his for landscaping.

I've got a 63 Chevy C70 high cab with a 6V53 Detroit, five and two speed. Ford called their version an N series. It's had a building sitting on it for around 12 years. Finally decided to dismantle the building. Engine won't start but runs on either, must be some kind of fuel delivery problem. Also, sitting so long the brakes have stuck to the drums. Once the building is off, I'll try to get her running. Didn't burn much oil but sure leaks plenty and the exhaust sure was dark.
