Clutch problem with HD-5

Sometimes the main clutch handle, on my HD-5 crawler, acts like something broke or came loose.  I can move it back and forth with no resistance.  Eventually, it will "straighten up and fly right" and works like it's supposed to.  Any ideas?  Thanks.

Open inspection cover on bell housing and observe the workings of the over center clutch . 
Had similar problem when one of the arms came loose from throw out bearing , arms are heal in by pins and have cotter pin to hold in - one came loose . 
 Also another thing to be aware of is the throw out bearing rides on a brass sleeve and when machine is idling transmission should be in neutral with master clutch engaged to prevent wear to this brass . there are grease zerks in the piece which need greasing also .

I forgot to ask, how many "pumps" of the grease gun should these zerks be given and how often?  Thanks, again.  Bob R

General rule of thumb is to grease till you see a little come out the other side.

Or listen and feel the pump, as the cavity fills, you will feel the hose tense up, then hear a small poch (phonetic spelling), as the grease seal (if it has one) unloads. On small diameter shafts, about 4-5 pumps, more on larger shafts, or if it haxn't been greased in years...

the clutch should SNAP over-center in both engage and disengage movement . A definite noise should be heard when moving lever as well as a resistance to movement felt in lever travel.  
The clutch pressure plate is adjustable - by loosening a hold down bolt and moving slotted ring . 
 amount of grease would depend on how worn parts are or how often machine is used. Sometimes a little is better than a lot .
