 Topic: Catchem Live Coon Trap

I built a nice portable Coon trap using Stock Panel frame Pieces covered with Chain Link Fencing. Top, Bottom, Sides and one end. The Drop Gate Door is part of my 5x12 Hog trap. Made the same way as the Coon Trap. A Piece of Stock Panel covered with Chain Link fence. Just to look at it, it should hold any Coon That trips the gate. When the gate is closed there is a 1 1/4" X 24 opening between the top of the trap and the gate. I never thought a coon could escape thru a 1 1/4" opening. I know they can't get thru a chain link fence. I have no game cam set up so I'm just guessing the coons tripping the trap are getting out by squeezing thru the narrow 1 1/4" X 24 opening. I have what I need to close the gap to 1/2 inch before my wife shuts off my supply of Bait. Purina Cat Chow No full grown Coon should be able to squeeze thru a 1/2 crack. Even if his name is Houdini. Or Octopussy.

A rabbit can go thru a 1 2/4" gap, but big coon,---no way! Are they getting their feet around the door locks?--- I have had them reach around the latches on a very old live trap and get out! Make sure the latches are not reachable from the inside.-- Also if there are more than 1,--the ones still outside will help the trapped one get out! thanks; ac fleet

acfleet has some good points.
Also i have a alive trap that a coon at my house and my neighbor's house got out of. The thing was tripped, and there was no sign of how they did it. I suspect that there was enough spring/flex in the edge of the trap door that they were able to wedge through it That trap is the large animal version from Harbor Freight. you could see where the trap had been moved around/rolled over.
None ever escaped the antique looking trap that i used at my daughter's house in SC.
Strange you should mention that after what my experience was.

I closed the crack to less than a half inch. I studied this trap from top to bottom . The largest way out anywhere are the holes in the chain link fencing. When the gate drops closed a spring loaded hook at the top prevents opening of the drop gate until I manually unhook the catch at the top. It would take a coon outside with plenty smarts to unhook the latch. And. The latch cannot be reached by any animal caught in the trap. I got a camera pointed at trap from the back. We shall see in the morning everything that happens tonight. The Pigs are back too. They left out for a few days. If they show up tonight on the game cam I will go back to trying to catch some porkers.

I generally prefer the catchem live, then shootem dead traps. My favorite is duke's coon trap, it won't hurt cats or dogs, and the coon can't chew his foot off. I favor trapping responsibly, check traps as often as possible, they do work. My favorite bait is cheap stinky cat food, smear on a big marshmallow, and it just fits in the duke trap. Also, take the juice off the cat food and make a scent trail, about 50 feet, from where traps are set, Just dribble a little, about 2' high on tall grass, brush or trees. Draws 'em in.
For the record, never caught a cat, dog, or anything else in this trap. Coons love to explore with their front paws, and that's the strength of the trap, and the weakness, of the coon...

I scared a rabbit out of the dog kennel today. Went right through the chain link fence like it wasn't even there. If I hadn't seen it, I'd a never believed it!!! it was a big doe. I'm still not sure I saw it.... But a coon can't do that, I know. The two dogs have torn into the coons bad enough and if they get a chance, they go right up the side of that fence to get away from those dogs.

The trap can and does catch Coons. My game cam shows several frames of a very large Coon in the trap. Also two more on the outside. Somehow between the three of them they managed let the trapped coon escape. Only way out is lifting the drop gate just enough to let the trapped coon out. Time to redesign the locking mechanism that is supposed to prevent the gate being lifted even a little bit . Coons are very strong and extreamly resourseful when it comes to getting free

Look close and count the coons. One in the trap and two helpers on the outside. Next frame 2 minutes later. No coons

If they are big enough and bold enough to help themselves to more Purina Cat Chow and trip the trap the only way they are getting out alive is ME TAKING THEM OUT. Been thinking ahead to how I'm going do that.

Will the whole trap fit in a 55 gallon drum of water? They don't swim well, inside a trap...

I had been living in our farm here for just about six weeks when I came home from a late shift... about 11pm, on a moonlit night, a racoon picked up a rock in it's mouth, scaled the east face of my grainery building, to the windows up top, took the rock, and smashed the window, climbed inside.
I trapped it with a flashlight and my .25ACP Taurus. A veterenarian friend advised me once that Raccoons have more nerve endings in their front paws, than humans have in their entire bodies... hence, they can reconstruct a mechanism in their heads, without being able to actually SEE it. They can also feel you walking towards them... if they're standing still.
