Specifically the 970 and 1070 series. Pros and cons, good or bad. What to watch for, etc? I know they are not orange but I'm sure some people have had contact with them and I always get better answers than I would on a forum with a Case bias.

I had an early 1070 in the 1980's and till the early 2000's. It was a pretty good tractor overall although I did have a few problems. The worst was a cylinder had a cavitation problem and I replaced only the bad one. Ran it several years after that with no engine problems.
The PTO brake quit working and after talking to a service man, all I had to do was replace a roll pin on the brake arm shaft.
I had the power shift transmission rebuilt by the dealer. I think it cost around $1,300 in the mid 1990s. It was just not shifting smoothly and I decided to get it fixed before it failed and cost a bunch more to fix.
Overall one could do worse if the price is right and a dealer is local.

My uncle and cousins have always had a Case. (2590,1070x3, 870) They like them real well. To quote my uncle "there clumbsy old tractors around the barn but great in the field" They used to chop with the 1070 until it burned up, but use the 870 dang near everyday. One thing about them if they have the 3speed powershift DONOT!!! put it in high gear and high on the PS when its cold and hit the clutch (hitting the clutch will drop it down to low range) it will throw you through the windshield! The thing that caused my uncles to burn was the "grease" build up under the cab. There is a nice sized area under there that oil and dirt will build up on and get hot. One cousin has pulled a 30ft disc with his 1070 (not very fast tho) I have always liked the Case tractors 70 90 and 94 series. They have a good motor (451ci 1070 and 504ci in the 13 and 1570, 90 and 94 series) The 70 and 90 series have a 3 speed powershift in 4 gears. The 94 series has a 6speed in 4 ranges.

i currently have a 1070. the disks on the shifter can get space between them and be a real headache if the lever gets in between them. hydrolics are not the greatest but with work can be good... pretty loud in general also. very sturdy tractor and has been very forgiving for me overall.. id go something newer though. i really would say a john deere if you want that era...

of course mine is an early model and does not have the powershift. ive heard horrible things about the powershift the later ones have...

My uncle bought a 1175 with the transmission out of it and never fixed it but from what I hear there a pretty solid tractor. We tested a Case 3594 before we bought our first 8970 and it was a pretty decent tractor. I like the way the engines sound in them. In that 3594 the powershift lever was different to get used to. Moved too easy and it would jump gears.

A neighbor runs Case and now CIH tractors. Has had pretty good luck with all but a 2290 Case. The rear end just couldn't take the power and torque. Expensive to repair, twice.

JohnCo it is funny you should mention the rear end. I have some neighbors who farm on a large scale for our area and they said they liked Case but the rear ends just wouldn't hold up.
