that a "circling" freighter waiting on the canal to be opened was carrying live cattle ?? A coworker told me this morning and I just can't imagine live cattle being transported via ship Ouch .Good Lord, if the cattle "entered" at 1,200 pounds, what did they weigh if "stuck" at sea for a week CryCry ??

YES... several ships  weekly ship cattle ...

At least 20 ships carrying livestock were among the hundreds of vessels unable to pass through the Suez Canal during its nearly weeklong logjam, The Guardian reported. ... What's more, livestock ships face unique barriers to unloading, as ports can refuse to accept them due to health reasons.1 day ago

and several appear to be en route between Romania and Saudi Arabia, according to ship data compiled by Bloomberg. The ones departing the European country are likely carrying sheep, which Saudi Arabia purchases so that the animals can be slaughtered according to religious preferences. Those traveling the other direction could be empty vessels.

The Middle Eastern nation is the world’s largest sheep importer by a wide margin, United Nations data shows. .

Vessels that crowd thousands of sheep and longer journeys raise the risk of disease and stress, said Stevenson of the animal welfare group. Some ships used to transport animals also have been converted from other purposes and aren’t ideally suited, he said. It can be difficult to reverse course after departure due to health rules.

Bishop said mortality rates for livestock generally are no higher at sea than on land, with most ships having a veterinarian.

A U.S. shipment of dairy cattle left the Texas port of Galveston late last year en route to Pakistan via the Suez, according to Bishop. Another recent shipment of U.S. cattle sailed from the West Coast to Pakistan, avoiding the Suez due to tolls, he said.

SPAIN also ships a lot of cattle thru the Suez going east..

Like them all, but love the "B"s.

It is interesting if you read what goes thru the canal.. There is travel in BOTH directions of course.... normally OIL goes thru to the west, and AG / crops / other go east ( in general)...lots of traffic..

If i remember right there are several "LAKES" along the canal.. one direction has the right of way... if your going the OTHER way, you set in the closest LAKE until they let you travel to the next. ... ONE WAY TRAFFIC thru the canal.

Egypt runs the show.. They put one of THEIR PILOTS on each ship.. But he does NOT pilot the ship.. He is a REFERENCE and Guiding Light that  "recommends" what to do.

They ship them on 747's as well.  A dairy was relocating from CA to western KS and they milked them in the morning in CA and milked them in the evening in KS.  Thumbs Up

Well Freedguy, now that you have accepted the fact that animals/livestock are shipped via container ship, how are you going to deny that humans are/have been trafficked the same way?
I tried to follow the science, but it was not there. I then followed the money, and that’s where I found the science.

I knew a guy that was a merchant marine.  He was Scottish and they shipped sheep to South America.  He said they ate good on those trips!

My SIL is a Merchant Marine and heading back home. He’s either waiting to go through the canal or has passed through. Interesting stories about what they carry, containers rolling off while at sea, etc. He’s been in dry dock for a month, somewhere near Oman because the Captain ran them aground.

They put one of THEIR PILOTS on each ship.. But he does NOT pilot the
ship.. He is a REFERENCE and Guiding Light that  "recommends" what to
do.

This is standard practice internationally... it is referred to as 'harbor pilots', their function is to serve as a navigational and communications director for the ship, when passing through a perilous passage.

Rest assured that when the container ship got blown aside during that sandstorm, the pilothouse crew included a harbor pilot.

Let's say you're an excellent pilot, and have been operating a seagoing tanker between Galveston and New Jersey, but now you get directed to Catoosa, Oklahoma.  You'll have quite a distance to cover, and as this is an INLAND passage, your navigation practices and principles are substantially different.  You might be at the wheel, but you WILL have a 'harbor pilot', and that pilot will know the bottom profile, the obstructions, water inlets and outlets, overhead wires, bridges, they'll know every island, every sandbar, every eddy and whirlpool along the way.

And they'll be in contact with traffic management, coordinate with other craft coming up and down the waterway, they'll know the bridge operators, the lock operators, the other local and guided vessels, and the other harbor pilots...

And they'll speak the local language.

You'll NEVER go through a major canal, or travel a navigable waterway, in a vessel of over 100 tons, without having either a license to pilot through THAT area, or having hired an appropriately liscensed harbor pilot as your guide.

Don't disrespect the pilot of that container ship.  They're extremely skilled, and entrusted with very, very difficult situations.  Those ships are about the most unmaneuverable, underpowered, helpless craft on the planet.  Frequently they're only one propeller, variable pitch, or worse yet, direct-reversing fixed-pitch... many have no thrusters, and they're basically OWNED by the wind.  They're piloting it through a canal that might have 5-6 FEET of clearance between keel and sandy bottom, and they're bumping that sand along the way, because the sand is MOVING.  Application of lots of thrust pulls water from beneath the keel, literally depriving the boat of water to float on.
Ten Amendments, Ten Commandments, and one Golden Rule solve most every problem. Citrus hand-cleaner with Pumice does the rest.

One of the 'mighty ships' episodes was on a 'cattle carrier'. REAL impressive.sailed from Australia to 'somewhere'. a LOT of ventilation, auto watering and feeding stations, pirate boarding drills...... well worth watching if you can find the series on TV or the internet.

I do recall dairy calves being on-loaded onto airplanes back in the late '70's/early '80's pertaining to "HEIFERS INTERNATIONAL" ?? A neighbor was a "member/breeder" of the Holsteins
