Can the cam gear be replaced without removing the shaft from the engine? I can get it off with a puller, but will it just slip on by heating the gear to 450 degrees? On the D17 IV we accomplished this by making a "pusher" tool to thread into the shaft and press it on. The B shaft doesn't appear to be threaded...

Yes, I have an I&T service manual, but was trying to avoid taking more parts off than necessary. I was indeed successful heating it up and tapping it on; no on to the governor!

I'm goina take a wild ass guess here and say you had a governor flyweight failure that got so bad it did collateral damage.

The gear is pressed on. I have always removed the gear with a press after removing the cam shaft and using the press to put it back on.
You will find out won't you. If it doesn't work out cams with the gear on are easy to come by thru ebay. Edited by Dick L - 21 Aug 2010 at 3:29pm |

Belongs to a friend; he reported the governor wasn't working - no power. He determined a spring controlling the governor was missing so he decided to replace it with a best guess from the local fleet farm. The new spring basically held the governor wide open and it wasn't long before the rookie operator experienced the crushing sounds of weights breaking and gears grinding. Lost the governor housing and cam gear; crank gear ok.
It is serial number 622 making it a 1939. It has a distributor so I order the governor for a distributor; found out today that I should have gotten the governor for a magneto as it must have had a magneto originally then was converted to distributor, but the governor wasn't changed over. Guess I should have opened it up before ordering parts.

The governor weights were probably wore out to begin with. It would be hard to get enough RPM's to cause a good governor to fly apart without opening up the main jet.
Then it would probly need a cam grind. |
