Hello everyone,
so whats the true story on R-22? our ac unit outside crapped out. motor in the compressor has a 'dead short', and service guy noted a small amount of oil on the lower part of the fins. he claims R-22, and compatible components longer available. |

I tried to follow the science, but it was not there. I then followed the money, and that’s where I found the science.

R22 is going the way of R12. You can still get R22 units that have no charge but the cost of the refrigerant is getting higher every year and will soon be very hard to find and when you do it well be very expensive. Not to mention, technicians in the future won't have a clue how to work on it. I changed my equipment over to 410A, not that I thought it would work better, just better decision in the long run.

thats part of the rub here, the 'future'. we are going to be in the house for only 6 to 10 more months. i hate to spend a boat load of money on something that i cant recover the cost. i want just the outside condensing unit repaired and recharged.

I'd really think about not fixing it as ,sigh, you won't need it fairly soon. Sounds like you're selling the place next year..so you _could_ just 'not worry' about it..... When you sell the place, if it comes up during a home inspection, say AC just died(play DUMB !!)....if pushed, take $1000 of selling price ? |

This is west Texas, where your ac is on from St. Patricks Day to Christmas (lol).
I have a couple of window units that cant keep up, even with the unused rooms closed off, not to mention the noise they create. |

Last I knew, United Refrigeration, supply company based in Texas, has replacement R22 condensing units.

Probably as cheap to buy the new outside unit as it is to fix it ( parts and labor)....Some units can be bought as R22 or R410.... you might be able to keep the inside unit if it is sized right to the new OUTSIDE unit... use the same copper lines , etc... Just cut / splice in the new outside unit, pull vacuum and fill with R410.

Steve, that what I was thinkin, the service tech (snake oil salesman) that the warrenty company sent, claims that 410 runs at a much higher psi, so all new piping, evaporator coil, and condensing unit are required. our cost will be $2830.00, and warrenty company kicking in an additional $1920.00.

That goes for 134A as well, 410A is the New and Improved stuff where is being pushed at ANY costs.

All R134a units are being changed out, not converted, to propane. They can use 6oz of propane to do what 2 pounds of R134A did. R134A was crap refrigerant from the start, has been around for many years but deemed not efficient enough until Dupont bought the rights to it.

We often reuse the piping from indoor to outdoor unit. We do try to have customer replace indoor coil at same time as outdoor unit. When possible. The indoor coils are pretty cheap. We. Charge about 3k installed for a 2 1/2 ton system complete. If indoor unit is an air handler not a furnace that price goes up rapidly.i would recommend getting more quotes.
